And That Happened: Division Series

Phillies 5, Rockies 1: Man, when Cliff Lee is on he’s on, isn’t he (CG, 6 H, 1 ER, 5K)? Nice of him to spare Charlie Manuel the need to fret over his bullpen for a day. Every Phillie had a hit, Lee included. Jayson Werth said the sun and wind made it “the toughest day I’ve ever seen in Philly.” Based on what I know about Philly, he must not spend a lot of time in town.

Yankees 7, Twins 2: This was all rather ho-hum. The Twins were no doubt gassed after Tuesday’s business, but Duensing was probably going to have trouble against that lineup regardless. Still — and I appreciate that this is hindsight, but I did think it at the time — maybe he should have left him in to face Matsui? Probably doesn’t matter. Deck chairs on the Titanic don’t you know.

Dodgers 5, Cardinals 3: Hey, does anyone here appreciate that I picked the Cardinals to win this? Shape up, will ya? Everyone, actually, because that was way too many walks from guys who are supposed to know better and way too many men left on base from teams who are supposed to be fundamentally sound. And since when is Jeff Weaver the get-you-out-of-a-jam guy in the pen?

I was at the game, so I missed it in the odd chance that the broadcasters said anything worthwhile about it.

I was shocked that Tracy let Jimenez bat in the sixth.  He just had a 30+ pitch inning where the phillies finally seemed to figure him out (after looking unbeatable for the first four innings) and the phillies had three out of four lefties coming up the next inning.

I’m a Phillies fan, so I’m happy he was left in, just wanted to know if anyone had any insight on it.

Also, how was Cliff Lee called safe on that pickoff play?

After watching the Yankee game last night, I don’t think this is going to happen at all =\

Since Game 4 of the ‘03 World Series?

Guh. As a Yankee fan when I saw Torre saunter to the mound to call in Weaver I had a Vietnam-like flashback

Anyone want to take a stab at an over/under for pitchers used in this series?  I guess it will depend on the number of games it takes, but 6 each a game seems like the minimum for Torre and TLR.

Hitters are batting against Jeff Weaver with .050/.167/.050 in 24 PAs when the bases are fully loaded. 1 hit, and 3 walks.

@Kevin S-
C’mon, you CAN criticize some Yankees some of the time- particularly dipsy-dumpster pitchers who have come and gone.
And, BTW, I did see Jeff mid-Sept 03 at OYS on freebie tickets for the bottom of a make-up doubleheader, and for some reason, he did win.
Which, if memory serves, is more than Farnsworth ever did.

Craig, maybe Carpenter had trouble last night because he is now throwing a slider instead of a cutter. At least that’s what the broadcasters kept telling me.

On the Rockies leaving Jimenez in:

This is something Tracy’s been doing since he took over as manager, esp. with Jimenez, who had a strong, consistent season after ironing out April control issues.  I don’t know if this is how Tracy was in LA and Pittsburgh, if it was a response to the shape of the bullpen when he took over, or if he figures this is the way to get the most out of his starters.  But he’s let his starters throw a lot of innings.

Jimenez also has a reputation of being dominant save for one inning.  He’ll often have these innings early, then settle down.  So that was probably behind the thinking, too.  Tracy (and most Rockies fans) thought the *5th* was the meltdown inning, and that he’d recover for the 6th, 7th, and possibly the 8th.

Did anyone see that Ludwick missed a bases clearing double against Weaver by less than a foot?  That, just before he grounded out to the right side.  Weaver got a bit lucky last night, and I don’t think the Cardinals will exactly be afraid if he comes in again today.

YankeesfanLen – I was being sarcastically derisive of Torre’s decision six years ago.  I guess it sometimes doesn’t come across in written form, though.  Believe me, I was NOT praising those events.
