Around the Majors: Epstein gets the GM title

1) The Red Sox gave Theo Epstein the title of GM again.

2) Red Sox P Guillermo Mota failed a physical, which puts the proposed Red Sox-Indians trade in danger. The trade would have sent OF Coco Crisp, P David Riske and C Josh Bard to the Red Sox for Mota, 3B Andy Marte and C Kelly Shoppach.

3) The Orioles re-signed RF Jay Gibbons to a 4 year, $21.1 million contract, to avoid salary arbitration. Gibbons would have been eligible for free agency after the season.

“Lee Sinins’ Sabermetric Encyclopedia is best reason yet developed to own a computer. I think I must own a copy of every baseball encyclopedia there is or ever was, and occasionally I find that I still need to pull out one of the others, but not very often; the Sabermetric Encyclopedia covers 97% of my needs. Whether I’m working or playing, calculating or daydreaming, the Sabermetric Encyclopedia pops up to help out. I turn it on in the morning; I turn it off when the house is on fire. Otherwise, I’m using it.”–Bill James
