Around the Majors: Halladay’s headed to the DL

1) BlueJays P Roy Halladay has a fatigued shoulder and is expected to miss the next 4-6 weeks. An MRI showed no structural damage or tears.

After 2.93 ERA/40 RSAA and 3.25 ERA/45 RSAA seasons, Halladay is off to a 4.35 ERA/5 RSAA start in his first 18 starts. He has a 3.90 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.60, and 89 RSAA in 162 games.

2) Diamondbacks LF Luis Gonzalez said he’ll have Tommy John surgery in early August.

After 30 RCAA/.896 OPS and 31 RCAA/.934 OPS seasons, Gonzalez is hitting .514 SLG, .378 OBA, .891 OPS, 11 RCAA in his first 92 games. He has a .860 career OPS, compared to his league average of .765, and 280 RCAA in 1995 games.

3) The Braves passed the Phillies into sole possession of 1st place in the NL East.

4) The Indians passed the Tigers into sole possession of 3rd place in the AL Central.

5) The Marlins tied the Mets for 3rd place in the NL East.

6) Larry Walker passed Greg Vaughn into 65th place on the all time HR list, with 356.

7) Carlos Delgado passed Reggie Smith into 90th place on the all time HR list, with 315.

8) Barry Bonds was out of yesterday’s lineup, due to root canal.

After 161 RCAA/1.381 OPS and 115 RCAA/1.278 OPS seasons, Bonds is hitting .792 SLG, .628 OBA, 1.420 OS, 85 RCAA in his first 81 games. He has a 1.045 career OPS, compared to his league average of .749, and 1429 RCAA in 2650 games.

Bonds has become the 3rd player to have at least 5 consecutive years with 80+ RCAA–

4) The Twins placed C Joe Mauer on the 15 day DL, retroactive to Friday, and called up C Rob Bowen.

Mauer has a sore left knee. He has a .570 SLG, .369 OBA, .939 OPS, 9 RCAA in his first 35 career games.

Bowen has -2 RCAA/.514 OPS in 13 career games, including 0 RCAA/.741 OPS in 6 games in 2004.

5) The Rangers activated P R.A. Rickey from the DL, called up OF Chad Allen and designated INF Manny Alexander and OF Jason Conti for assignment.

Dickey has a 5.43 ERA/-9 RSAA in 58 career games, including a 5.71 ERA/-5 RSAA in 13 starts (16 games) in 2004.

Allen has -29 RCAA/.717 OPS in 236 career games, including a .333 SLG, .267 OBA, .600 OPS, -3 RCAA in 10 games in 2004.

Alexander has -74 RCAA/.610 OPS in 545 career games, including 0 for 6, with -1 RCAA, in 4 games in 2004.

Conti has -23 RCAA/.657 OPS in 182 career games, including a .236 SLG, .250 OBA, .486 OPS, -7 RCAA in 22 games in 2004.

6) The Cubs activated SS Alex Gonzalez from the DL and designated SS Rey Ordonez for assignment.

After -8 RCAA/.737 OPS and -23 RCAA/.704 OPS seasons, Gonzalez is hitting .419 SLG, .271 OBA, .690 OPS, -6 RCAA in his first 26 games. He has a .698 career OPS, compared to his league average of .776, and -186 RCA in 1210 games.

After -27 RCAA/.616 OPS and 1 RCAA/.815 OPS seasons, Ordonez is “hitting” .262 SLG, .190 OBA, .453 OPS, -8 RCAA in his first 23 games. He has a .600 career OPS, compared to his league average of .773, and -207 RCAA in 973 games.

7) The Mets traded RF Karim Garcia to the Orioles for P Mike DeJean.

After 3 RCAA/.889 OPS and -6 RCAA/.724 OPS seasons, Garcia is off to a .401 SLG, .272 OBA, .673 OPS, -10 RCAA start in his first 62 games. He has a .708 career OPS, compared to his league average of .770, and -52 RCAA in 465 games.

Garcia had the 5th worst OBA vs. the league average for any Mets OF with at least 200 PA–

8) The Mets placed P Jose Parra on the 15 day DL and finally called up P Scott Erickson.

Parra has a strained hip flexor. He has a 6.09 ERA/-26 RSAA in 82 career games, including a 3.21 ERA/2 RSAA in 13 games in 2004.

9) The Expos called up OF Ron Calloway.

After starting his career with -31 RCAA/.656 OPS in 126 games in 2003, Calloway is off to a .091 SLG, .109 OBA, .200 OPS, -8 RCAA start in his first 25 games.

10) The Rockies called up P Travis Driskill, placed P Dennis Stark on the 15 day DL and designated P Turk Wendell for assignment.

Driskill has a 5.22 ERA/-17 RSAA in 50 career games.

Stark has a sore groin. He has a 5.78 ERA/-22 RSAA in 64 career games, including a 11.42 ERA/-7 RSAA in 6 starts in 2004.

Wendell, who had been on the DL, has a 3.93 ERA/25 RSAA in 552 career games, including a 7.02 ERA/-3 RSAA in 12 games in 2004.

11) The Mariners traded SS Rich Aurilia to the Padres for a player to be named later or cash.

After -8 RCAA/.718 OPS and -12 RCAA/.735 OPS seasons, Aurilia is off to a .337 SLG, .304 OBA, .641 OPS, -12 RCAA start in his first 73 games. He has a .766 career OPS, compared to his league average of .777, and 1 RCA in 1066 games.

12) Pirates P Salomon Torres started serving a 3 game suspension, for throwing at A’s C Damian Miller on June 12.

After having a 4.76 ERA/-7 RSAA in 2003, Torres is off to a 3.00 ERA/6 RSAA in a career high 49 games. He has a 5.00 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.37, and -38 RSAA in 163 games.

13) The Reds placed 3B Brandon Larson on the 15 day DL and will call up P Brandon Claussen.

Larson has a strained hamstring and it’s the 3rd time this season he’s gone on the DL. He has -20 RCAA/.570 OPS in 109 career games, including a .339 SLG, .304 OBA, .643 OPS, -4 RCAA in a career high 40 games in 2004.

Claussen, who will start today, had a 1.42 ERA/2 RSAA in 1 start with the 2003 Yankees.

14) The Yankees sent P Alex Graman to the minors and will call up P Scott Proctor today.

Graman, who didn’t last through the 1st inning in his start yesterday, has a 19.80 ERA/-8 RSAA in his first 2 career starts (3 games).

Proctor has a 7.36 ERA/-2 RSAA in his first 5 career games.

15) Dodgers P Paul Shuey’s chances of returning this season are over, he’ll have his 3rd hip surgery and he fears his career is in jeopardy.

Shuey’s been on the DL all season.

16) The Dodgers activated RF Juan Encarnacion from the DL and sent OF Chin-Feng Chen to the minors.

After -8 RCAA/.773 OPS and -5 RCAA/.759 OPS seasons, Encarnacion is off to a .429 SLG, .291 OBA, .720 OPS, -9 RCAA start in his first 76 games. He has a .755 career OPS, compared to his league average of .776, and -57 RCAA in 828 games.

Chen has -2 RCAA/.071 OPS in 10 career games, including 0 for 7, with -1 RCAA, in 6 games in 2004.

17) According to the Toronto Star, it’s only a question of “now or at the end of the season” as to when BlueJays manager Carlos Tosca will be fired.

18) The Diamondbacks activated INF Carlos Baerga from the DL and sent OF Luis Terrero to the minors.

After -4 RCAA/.695 OPS and 6 RCAA/.859 OPS seasons, Baerga is off to a .214 SLG, .234 OBA, .448 OPS, -6 RCAA start in his first 40 games (47 PA). He has a .757 career OPS, compared to his league average of .755, and -5 RCAA in 1498 games.

Terrero has 0 RCAA/.824 OPS in 11 career games, including 1 RCAA/.859 OPS in 6 games in 2004.

19) The Brewers called up P Ben Hendrickson and sent INF Matt Erickson to the minors.

Hendrickson has a 11.25 ERA/-6 RSAA in his first 2 career starts.

Erickson was 1 for 6, with -1 RCAA, in his first 4 career games.
