Around the Majors: Ordonez injury

1) The Whitesox placed RF Magglio Ordonez on the 15 day DL and called up OF Joe Borchard.

Ordonez’s injured left knee could keep him out for the rest of the season.

Borchard has -9 RCAA/.532 OPS in 38 career games, including -2 RCAA/.396 OPS in 6 games in 2004.

2) Barry Bonds watch–hit #683, is 17 away from 700, is 31 behind Ruth, is 72 behind Aaron.

Bonds tied the major league record for most consecutive years with 25+ HR seasons. After 161 RCAA/1.381 OPS and 115 RCAA/1.278 OPS seasons, Bonds is hitting .779 SLG, .616 OBA, 1.395 OPS, 85 RCAA in his first 85 games. He has a 1.045 career OPS, compared to his league average of .749, and 1429 RCAA in 2654 games.

3) The Braves passed the Phillies into sole possession of 1st place in the NL East.

4) The Giants moved into a virtual tie, with the Padres, for 2nd place in the NL West. The Padres lead in PCT.

5) Sammy Sosa watch–hit #558, is 5 behind Reggie Jackson for 8th place.

6) Gary Sheffield passed Dale Murphy and Andres Galarraga and tied Al Kaline for 38th place on the all time HR list, with 399.

7) Redsox 1B Kevin Millar hit 3 HR in a game.

After 19 RCAA/.875 OPS and 6 RCAA/.820 OPS seasons, Millar is hitting .442 SLG, .359 OBA, .801 OPS, 0 RCAA in his first 88 games. He has a .850 career OPS, compared to his league average of .777, and 72 RCAA in 736 games.

8) Phillies 1B Jim Thome and P Billy Wagner weren’t available yesterday.

Thome was out of the lineup, due to a cortisone shot in his right index finger, and is expected to be able to start today. After 88 RCAA/1.122 OPS and 53 RCA/.958 OPS seasons, he is hitting .659 SLG, .407 OBA, 1.066 OPS, 40 RCAA in his first 87 games. Thome has a .984 career OPS, compared to his league average of .773, and 568 RCAA in 1623 games.

Wagner had a cortisone shot in his sore left shoulder and isn’t expected to be able to return until either tomorrow or Monday. After 2.52 ERA/15 RSAA and 1.78 ERA/26 RSAA seasons, Wagner is off to a 3.12 ERA/5 RSAA start in his first 31 games. He has a 2.57 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.31, and 104 RSAA in 495 games.

9) The Diamondbacks set a team record with a 12 game losing streak.

10) According to the LA Times, Expos P Tony Armas could be the Dodgers top trade target. Although Expos GM Omar Minaya is saying Armas isn’t available, there’s a belief that could change as the trade deadline gets closer.

11) The Diamondbacks called up P Lance Cormier and sent P Brandon Villafuerte to the minors.

Cormier gave up 7 runs in 1 1/3 IP (47.25 ERA/-6 RSAA) in his only career start and he’ll start today.

Villafuerte has a 4.12 ERA/-1 RSAA in 91 career games, including a 4.05 ERA/1 RSAA in 20 games in 2004.

12) The Expos called up P Roy Corcoran and sent P Chad Bentz to the minors.

Corcoran had a 1.23 ERA/3 RSAA in 5 games in 2003.

Bentz has a 5.86 ERA/-6 RSAA in his first 36 career games.

13) The Orioles placed CF Luis Matos on the 15 day DL, called up P John Maine and designated minor league INF Jose Morban for assignment.

Matos has a bruised right shin. After 10 RCAA/.811 OPS in his first year as a starter, he is off to a .333 SLG, .275 OBA, .609 OPS, -26 RCAA start in his first 89 games. Matos has a .688 career OPS, compared to his league average of .772, and -35 RCAA in 318 games.

Morban “hit” .225 SLG, .187 OBA, .412 OPS, -7 RCAA in 61 games (77 PA) in 2003.

14) The Royals will call up P Chris George today.

George, who will start in today’s doubleheader, has a 6.18 ERA/-29 RSAA in 42 career games, including a 5.20 ERA/-3 RSAA in 5 starts in 2004.

15) Indians P Jason Stanford will have Tommy John surgery.

He’s been on the DL since April.

16) The Mariners released 1B John Olerud and sent C Pat Borders to the minors, after he cleared waivers. They were both removed from the 25 and 40 man rosters when they were designated for assignment on July 16.

17) The Rangers activated RF Brian Jordan from the DL, called up P Rosman Garcia, activated C Gerald Laird from the DL, placed P Ricardo Rodriguez on the 15 day DL and designated OF Chad Allen and C Danny Ardoin for assignment.

After 13 RCAA/.807 OPS and 7 RCA/.791 OPS seasons, Jordan is off to a .167 SLG, .226 OBA, .392 OPS, -9 RCAA start in his first 16 games. He has a .801 career OPS, compared to his league average of .771, and 54 RCAA in 1287 games.

After starting his career with a 6.02 ERA/-5 RSAA in 46 games in 2003, Rosman gave up 1 run in 1 IP in his first appearance in 2004.

Laird has -3 RCAA/.748 OPS in 48 career games, including a .352 SLG, .374 OBA, .726 OPS, -2 RCAA in 29 games in 2004.

Rodriguez has a broken arm and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Allen has -28 RCAA/.721 OPS in 238 career games, including a .387 SLG, .313 OBA, .700 OPS, -2 RCAA in 12 games in 2004.

Ardoin has -4 RCAA/.539 OPS in 21 career games, including 1 for 8, with 3 BB and -1 RCAA, in 6 games in 2004.

18) The Astros sent P Chad Qualls to the minors, to make room on the roster for newly acquired P Darren Oliver.

Qualls gave up 1 run in 1 IP in his only career appearance.

19) The Mets placed OF Shane Spencer on the 15 day DL and called up P Dan Wheeler.

Spencer cut his right foot when he step on broken glass. After -6 RCAA/.699 OPS and -6 RCAA/.721 OPS seasons, he is off to a .411 SLG, .332 OBA, .742 OPS, 1 RCAA start in his first 74 games. Spencer has a .754 career OPS, compared to his league average of .772, and -5 RCAA in 538 games.

Wheeler had just been sent down.

20) A’s RF Jermaine Dye reached 1000 career hits.

After 0 RCAA/.792 OPS and -20 RCAA/.514 OPS seasons, Dye is hitting .499 SLG, .340 OBA, .839 OPS, 5 RCAA in his first 94 games. He has a .801 career OPS, compared to his league average of .773, and 12 RCAA in 996 games.
