1) The Padres traded P Brian Lawrence and cash to the Nationals for 3B Vinny Castilla.

2) The Brewers have a press conference scheduled for today, with Robin Yount expected to be named bench coach.

3) The Devil Rays hired Andrew Friedman as VP of Baseball Operations and Gerry Hunsicker as Senior VP of Baseball Operations. They will be the #1 and #2 men respectively, in the organization.

4) The Padres hired Glenn Hoffman (3B) and Tye Waller (1B) as coaches.

5) The Yankees hired Tony Pena as 1B coach.

6) The Tigers sent the Blue Jays cash to complete the July 22 trade that sent INF John McDonald to the Tigers.

7) The Rangers signed OF Adam Hyzdu, Cs Jamie Burke and Nick Trzesniak and Ps Chris Baker and Shane Bazzell to minor league contracts.

8) Dodgers P Elmer Dessens declined his player option and filed for free agency.

9) The Blue Jays met with P A.J. Burnett. Burnett will be a free agent.

Teams are permitted to meet with free agents as soon as they file, but aren’t “allowed” to discuss contract terms until they hit the open market.

10) Dwight Gooden pled guilty to a felony count of speeding away from police after a traffic spot in August, misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and obstruction and an unrelated charge of hitting his girlfriend and was sentenced to 3 years probation.
