Around the Majors: Radatz dies

1) Dick Radatz died at the age of 67. Radatz died of severe head injuries, after falling down a flight of stairs, onto a carpet-covered concrete floor.

Radatz had a 3.13 career ERA, compared to his league average of 3.63, and 54 RSAA in 381 games with the 1962-64 Redsox. He started his career with 26, 28 and 26 RSAA seasons.

2) Mets P Steve Trachsel will have back surgery and is expected to miss at least 3 months.

After 3.37 ERA/10 RSAA and 3.78 ERA/10 RSAA seasons, Trachsel had a 4.00 ERA/6 RSAA in 33 starts. He has a 4.23 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.34, and 21 RSAA in 345 games.

3) The Astros released P Peter Munro.

Munro has a 4.88 ERA/-13 RSAA in 120 career games, including a 5.15 ERA/-9 RSAA in 19 starts (21 games) in 2004.

4) The Mets released 2B Danny Garcia.

5) The Dodgers named Derek Lowe their Opening Day starter.

After 2.58 ERA/44 RSAA and 4.47 ERA/6 RSAA seasons, Lowe had a 5.42 ERA/-10 RSAA in 33 starts with the Redsox. He has a 3.88 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.61, and 101 RSAA in 396 games.

6) The Reds named Paul Wilson their Opening Day starter.

After 4.83 ERA/-8 RSAA and 4.64 ERA/-7 RSAA seasons, Wilson had a 4.36 ERA/-7 RSAA in 29 starts. He has a 4.71 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.39, and -45 RSAA in 161 games.

7) The Devil Rays named Dewon Brazelton their Opening Day starter.

Brazelton has a 5.34 ERA/-19 RSAA in 34 career games, including a 4.77 ERA/-5 RSAA in 21 starts (22 games) in 2004.

8) The Devil Rays sent SS B.J. Upton, OFs Delmon Young, Joey Gathright and Jonny Gomes and Ps Chris Seddon, Jose Diaz, Brian Sweeney and Chad Orvella to the minors and released P Mark Guthrie.

Guthrie, who was out of the majors in 2004, has a 4.05 ERA/19 RSAA in 765 career games.

9) The Marlins sent INF Jason Stokes, OF Eric Reed and Matt Padgett, C Jason Hill and Ps Randy Messenger, Justin Wayne, Yorman Bazardo, Chris Respo, Chad Bentz and J.B. Miadich to the minors.

10) The Whitesox sent Ps Dave Sanders, Ryan Meaux and Josh Stewart to the minors.

11) The Indians re-signed manager Eric Wedge to a 2 year contract extension, covering 2006-07, with a team option for 2008-09.

12) On Sunday, Frank “Pig” House died at the age of 75.

House was a C from 1960-61 (except 1952-53). He had a .663 career OPS, compared to his league average of .737, and -77 RCAA in 653 games, mostly with the Tigers.

13) The Nationals placed INF Henry Mateo and P Claudio Vargas on the 15 day DL and sent 1B Larry Broadway, Cs John Wilson and Hector Ortiz and Ps Danny Rueckel and Darrell Rasner to the minors.

Mateo has tendinitis in his shoulder. He has -18 RCAA/.583 OPS in 167 career games, including a .318 SLG, .289 OBA, .607 OPS, -4 RCAA in 40 games (46 PA) in 2004.

Vargas has a sprained elbow. He has a 4.80 ERA/-5 RSAA in 68 career games, including a 5.25 ERA/-15 RSAA in 45 games (14 starts) in 2004.

14) The Royals sent SS Andres Blanco to the minors.

15) The Angels sent Ps Eric Cyr and Corey Lee to the minors.

16) The Mariners sent SS Michael Morse, SS-2B Yuniesky Betancourt, 3B Justin Leone, INF Mickey Lopez, OFs Shin-Soo Choo and Wladimir Balentien, C Rene Rivera and Ps Clint Nageotte and Jon Huber to the minors.

17) The Reds sent 1B A.J. Zapp, 2B William Bergolla, 3B Travis Chapman, OF Kenny Kelly, Cs Miguel Perez and Brian Peterson and Ps Brian Shackelford, Daylan Childress, Bubba Nelson, Ben Kozlowski, Elizardo Ramirez, Phil Dumatrait and Jared Fernandez to the minors.
