Around the Majors: White Sox buy out Thomas

1) The White Sox bought out Frank Thomas’s option for $3.5 million. They are expected to try to sign him at a rate lower than the $10 mutual option the parties had.

2) The Angels gave manager Mike Scioscia a contract extension through the 2009 season, with an option for 2010.

3) The Indians exercised their $4 million option on 2B Ronnie Belliard.
