Big League Clubz

Schlotzsky’s is still around? Do you know anyone who has eaten at one in like five years?

Consumers seeking more bang for their dining-out buck need look no farther than participating Schlotzsky’s restaurants. Between now and May 31, the bases are loaded with three rookie players from the newly formed, highly stacked Big League Clubz line-up . . .

. . . “We always strive to give our guests ‘lotz better’ high-quality sandwiches, so we think our new Big League Clubz will be a grand slam with customers wanting ‘lotz fresher’ meat and unique flavor combinations,” said Kelly Roddy, Schlotzsky’s president. “And with our sweepstakes featuring great baseball prizes, we’re throwing out ‘lotz more’ reasons to check out Schlotzsky’s.”

Visitors to http://www.BigLeagueClubz.com can enter to win baseball gear, fantasy baseball teams and the grand prize of airfare, a two-night hotel stay and $2,000 to see all the stars play in St. Louis on July 14th.*

Seriously, I represented Schlotzksy’s in a giant arbitration against its franchisees eight or nine years ago. We got creamed, and probably deserved it, that operation was in such bad shape. If you would have told me that company would still be around in 2009, I would have called you crazy.

But hey, maybe they got “lotz better.”

Has anyone ever heard of Golden Corral? I’m in SoCal, and we have commercials by them all the damn time. Thing is, there’s only three in the state, and none out here. Is there something I’m missing?

They’re all over back east. You’re not missing anything.  Big buffets with mediocre food and grayish, gross steak.

I went to a Schlotsky’s three weeks ago. There is one half a mile from my house. Not my absolute favorite, but they provide a decent meal.

We see a TON of Golden Corral commercials, but I have yet to see one in the entire Metro NYC area.  Then again, I’m not exactly looking for them either…

I live in Austin, where Schlotzsky’s was founded, and yes, there’s still plenty of them. I like their sandwiches, though I don’t eat there often.

A few Golden Corrals here, too. It’s good for a road trip stop-by if you have finicky kids, because there’ll be SOMETHING they’ll eat. Derisively referred to as “the Swollen Colon”.

There was a Golden Corral in Charlottesville, VA…but I think I see MORE commercials for them here in Chicago, and I’ve never seen one (a restaurant) around here. I guess they’re probably in the suburbs.

It’s not nice of them to make fun of Schlotzky’s president’s speech impediment like that.

(Seriously, “lotz better”? How much do you suppose the person who wrote that press release hates his/her job?)

Also in Austin and yes – there are Schlotzsky’s everywhere. They are decent. Some unique sandwiches. Now that every sandwich place in the world offers toasted sandwiches some of their uniqueness has been lost.

I have never, ever heard of Schlotsky’s in my entire life.

We used to get a lot of Sonic commercials when I lived in Maryland. Hell, I get them in New York too. I’ve never seen one before, though I presume they must be around somewhere in the DC and NYC TV markets.

Just looked them up – no wonder I’ve never heard of it. Wiki says it’s based in the South and Southwest. Haven’t spent too much time in those parts. Mostly just the Eastern Seaboard South (Carolinas, Georgia, Florida).

Grant—they opened the first Sonic here in Columbus Ohio a couple of years ago.  AFAIK, there’s only one still.  I’ve seen the commercials for years—they were all over TBS when the Braves were on—and the food and those slushy drinks looks absolutely hideous.

The best slogan Schlotsky’s ever used was “Except No Substitutsky’s.”  I ate at one about a month ago in Nashville.

I can skip Schlotzski’s – it’s Steak-n-Shake I’m jonesing for.

Schlotzky’s: I’ve heard of it, and eaten there maybe once about 8 years ago. There’s at least one in Wichita.

Golden Corral: At least one also here in Wichita. I’ve never eaten there. Seems like a Hometown Buffet, which are pretty blah.

Sonic: When I lived in L.A., there were constant commercials for Sonic, but not a one to be found.

Finally, I’d like to formally lodge a complaint that Wichita has neither a Jack-In-The-Box nor an In-and-Out Burger. I wonder if the city has something against dashes.

Craig-

I can confirm that there are at least 4 Sonics in the greater Columbus metroplex at this point and more are coming. Their (soda) drinks are decent, their onion rings are horrible, and I haven’t been able to think about their ice cream since I read the sign at he restaurant about their banana pudding shake containing “banana pudding oil” by way of flavoring. I am not making that up.

There were some Schlotzky’s around here too, but the only two I knew of closed up a couple of years ago.

I win this one.  Why?  I live within .5 miles of a Golden Corral AND a Schlotzsky’s.  The last place I lived in a town 100 miles from here also put me within .5 miles of a Schlotzsky’s.  My best friend’s parents had a lot of dinner dates at Schlotzsky’s when they were in college, and so they have a romantic attachment to any and all of them.  You get bemused by something new every day…

Schlotzsky’s Thai Pizza is rather unique and I could go for one right now.

We just got our first Sonic here in San Diego (it’s actually in Santee) last week and it’s a freakin zoo.  They have a staging area a block away.  It’s something like an hour wait.  Probably faster just to drive to El Centro.

The best thing about Schlotzsky’s is probably the bread…it’s pretty delicious, haha. If you’re looking for a distraction, I recommend checking out the game on http://www.bigleagueclubz.com – I could play it for hours.
