BREAKING: Nick Adenhart killed in car crash

According to TMZ, Angels’ starter Nick Adenhart was killed in an automobile accident this morning:

TMZ has learned Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a felony hit-and-run car accident in Fullerton, California early this morning — hours after he pitched in a game last night. Cops say someone driving a minivan blew through a red light, causing the Mitsubishi that Adenhart was riding in to hit a light pole. Three people were killed in the crash, including Nick.

It’s reportedly a hit and run, and the other driver is still at large.

Note: this is the only source that I’ve seen on this yet. Let’s hope and pray that it’s wrong. I’ll pass along any updates I can find as the story develops.

UPDATE: Other news sources are starting to pick this up, so it appears to be legitimate. Also, it’s now being reported that the driver of the other vehicle has been arrested. This is absolutely terrible news.

UPDATE: Another source confirms.

What a tragedy!  For a young man (in this case a VERY young man)  to have his life snuffed out just as he was beginning to enjoy the fruits of his God given gifts and hard work.  My thoughts and prayers are with his friends, family and teammates.

I was still hoping it was April 1, or this was a late April fool.

Right after his 4th start of a very promising career, damn.

Just an absolute shame.  One of the reports also stated that another of the victims in the crash was also in the Angels Organization but no other names have been released yet.

A huge tragedy and one of my favorite prospects.  Adenhart was a hell of a pitcher just about to break out IMO.  Heart goes out to the team and family.

This absolutely kills me.  I just cannot believe the senseless tragedy.  Go with God, Nick.  My prayers are with your family and friends.

Absolutely heartbreaking.

Baseball isn’t really that fun today.

So very wrong…so very sad.  *sigh*

————

Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields were glory does not stay
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.

Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears:

Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.

My condolences to those killed in the senseless crash, I hope the law comes down on the hit-and-run driver hard, but, unfortunately, I find that the laws sometimes protects the wrong doer more than it respects the life taken.

Sara K, thanks for posting the poem.  Beautiful and appropriate.  Very sad.
