Buehrle Perfect!!!

I feel like I’m trampling on David Pinto’s in-game-update turf, but Mark Buehrle is perfect through seven innings against the Rays.

UPDATE: Perfect through eight . . .

UPDATE: And he did it!! I didn’t see it, but I was told he was saved by a spectacular catch by DeWayne Wise in center off the bat of Gabe Kapler. Must get to TV . . .

Congratulations Mark Buehrle! One of my favorite pitchers in the game pulls off the perfecto!

How about that!

UPDATE: Reader RickyB relates the catch for those of us who missed it:

MLB.com had a live look-in free, so I got to watch the top of the ninth. The catch was unbelievable! Wise robbed a homer, and as he was falling back to earth, the ball started coming out of his glove. He grabbed it with his bare hand as he fell to the ground. Unreal!

Thanks Ricky!

What happened?  Gameday says that Kapler doubled.

And now it says he flied out.

Boy is gameday flaky!  Now it says that Buehrle is facing Upton in the middle of the ninth.

Perfect all the way!

I thought maybe there was some kind of weird perfect game rule where the losing team gets one last chance in the middle of the ninth.  Like the rebuttal in beer pong.

MLB.com pushed the story to the web a little too quick:

“Twenty-seven up, 27 down. Mark Buehrle mowed through the Rays for the first perfect game since Randy Johnson in 2004, striking out XX along the way.”

I flipped MLB Audio over to the game in the top of the 8th. Loved hearing the crowd, and realizing just how ridiculously quick Buehrle moves. I had to take the headphones off for a minute to talk to my boss as the ninth inning started. I put them back on and the crowd and the announcers were going crazy. I thought the game was over, but everyone was reacting to Wise’s catch. White Sox fans might’ve loved that more than the Dodgers fans loved Manny grand slam last night. Watching the replay, it was pretty spectacular, especially considering it was leading off the ninth inning of a perfect game.

Very happy for Buehrle. Maybe he won’t be so underrated anymore…

They’re a bit Zapruder-like, but I put a few pix of the catch up here: http://www.itsaboutthemoney.net/2009-articles/july/saving-a-perfecto.html

Sorry for the quality…blackberry phone off of regular def TV

Unfortunately, everyone and their mother was getting on MLBTV so the darn thing was skipping for me, but that catch was amazing.

I respect Buehrle for being a great pitcher, but I can’t stand when he faces the Angels.  He’s one of those guys who you never think should beat you because he throws 88 mph junk.  Somehow, he almost always does.

I was en route to the game today when my glasses exploded. I can’t see much without them. I went home. I missed a perfect game.

Buerhle is the forgotten stud of true #1 starters when we discuss that topic. Congrats to a genuinely classy pro.

What is in the balls this year?

Jonathan Sanchez was one error away from perfection a couple of weeks ago.  Then one of the A’s pitchers had a perfecto to the 7th or 8th too.  And now Buerhle.

To add to what ‘lar’ stated: Maybe this will get people to realize something only White Sox fans think and few outside baseball minds point out; 300 wins for Buehrle?  Yes the power stuff will never be there but now not 1 but 2 no hitters (this one of course pefect) but you have to at least begin believe he has brains to keep doing this.

Tyler, that sucks beyond belief.
