Ch-ch-ch-changes

Neyer agrees that with Fremont dead, the A’s need to look at Portland. Or maybe he’s not that serious about it. Hard to tell. What is clear, however, is that Neyer has a new headshot running with his columns. And let’s be honest about this, people: we are now two generations removed from the flannel, so I think it’s about time we all gave up hope of it returning.

Fear not, flannel is still around. I see it worn ironically by hipsters on a daily basis. This is what I get for living in Brooklyn, of course…

Also, do you think Neyer goes tanning? He’s a very tan man…

‘Smells like middle-aged man spirit’ doesn’t have the same cache.

Smells like someone that took a look at the map, saw there was an NBA franchise there, and thought: Why not relocate an MLB team there? As one commenter put it in the root article: It’s an awesome city, but it’s not a sports town. And (s)he’s right – Oregonians, faux or otherwise, aren’t big into team sports.

Wooden—good points. I’ll admit that Portland has a ton of problems, and my preference for it as a landing spot for the A’s is based on zero reason and a healthy dose of aesthetic and other mushy concerns.  I have a post about this going live a little after 10 which addresses this.  Short version: before you think about anywhere else, you have to think about San Jose.

Thanks, Craig – I’ll be watching for it; I presume you already know the way (*rimshot!*)

RE: Flannel.  You haven’t been to Portland lately, have you?  Cuz flannel is alive and kicking here.

When did Willem Dafoe take over Neyer’s column?

I think Craig is referring to the Neyer picture in which he’s looking sorta dorky and wearing a flannel shirt… he replaced it with the previous picture, which looked like a model head shot with very large teeth, and now this one.  I’ve always wished he’d go back to that flannel picture, because it’s how I imagine Neyer looks in real life.  I don’t like my sportswriters with such shiny teeth.  I like a little dorkiness.

Aaron: Nicely done but I think Neyer’s face is still too full to be a perfect comparison but if he loses another 30-40 pounds and really gets the cheeks to sink in he is a dead on match.
