Compete against Derek Carty for cash (again)

As you know by know, I’ve been writing at FanDuel and participating in their daily fantasy baseball leagues this season. On Opening Day, FanDuel ran a promotion for THT readers that allowed you guys to compete against me for cash. This Sunday, you’ll have the chance to do so again. And once again, entrance is 100% free!

We’ll be competing in a FanDuel MLB Salary Cap 35k contest where you have $35k to spend on any nine players you want at the following positions:
P, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF

The scoring system is points based:
Hitters: 1B = 1pt, 2B = 2pts, 3B = pts, HR = 4pts, RBI = 1pt, R = 1pt, BB = 1pt, SB = 2pts, Out = -.25pt
Pitchers: W = 7pts, ER = -1pt, SO=1pt, IP = 1pt

Prizes are structured as such:

1st	$100
2nd	$75
3rd	$30
4th	$20
5th	$15
6th	$10
Additionally, anyone who beats me, whether they finish in the top six or not, will receive $5.

If you still haven’t taken the plunge into daily leagues, I’d highly recommend them. I’ve just started playing this year, but they’re a lot of fun. This would be a great chance to get your feet wet, completely free, and with the added bonus of getting to compete against me and win cash! And if you need extra incentive, you will be helping THT make a little money just by playing. All you have to do is click here, sign up (takes less than a minute), and pick your team!

If you’re not a member of FanDuel yet, if you sign up for the site with this link you’ll get $10 deposited into your account for free.

The $10 link didn’t get me $10. Too bad…

Ok i figured out the details on the referral. You actually have to deposit money to get the bonus. However, if you deposit $10, you will get a $10 Derek Carty bonus (Derek also clears a cool $10) and a $5 deposit bonus to boot. So $10 turns into $25, or 5 chances to win a $5 match (which come in H2H, 5 team, and 10 team).

Yeah, not my best day.  Actually, it qualifies as my second worst since I’ve started playing.  Despite that, I still managed to win 2 of 3 head-to-head matches, at least

It’s very tough when your pitcher does nothing because the scoring system for pitchers is so favorable.  Getting a ‘3’ from Zambrano really hurts.  The decision yesterday came down to going cheap with either Zambrano or Beachy or going for a sure-to-be-dominating start with Halladay in PETCO against a terrible and strikeout-prone Padres offense.  Ultimately, I thought Zambrano was a slightly better play than Beachy and would come more than $1000 cheaper, so that’s the route I went.  It didn’t work out, but I think the decision-making was sound.

A quick summary of my strategy in FanDuel to this point (leaving out a lot of specifics and factors I look at) has usually been going with a cheap pitcher who’s facing poor offense and who’s skills are both still relatively good and don’t match the low price tag he costs.  I think this is a better percentage play (though allows for more variance) than paying sticker price for an elite pitcher who is a well-known commodity.  Sometimes, you get a Zambrano day.  Other times, your $4200 pitcher turns in a $20 day and you’re golden.

Especially in a contest where there are 150 people and only the top few get paid out, I think going with the strategy that emphasizes variance is the better route.  Finishing 25th has the same monetary result as finishing 95th, but if it works out, I’ve got a shot at finishing in one of the top spots.

Hey Derek Carty, I love an article of yours that I just read! I’m a writer, too, and curious if you can help me find a similar article that I seem to have lost.

Your piece is the one on the movement of player values throughout the year’s change in market dynamics.

Thanks!
