Department of thankless tasks: Beltran is supposed to help fill the hole left by Albert Pujols’ departure. He was actually about as good as Pujols last year, with a slightly higher wOBA (.389, a few points higher than Pujols’ .385) and comparable WAR (4.7, to Albert’s 5.1). The Cardinals will ask him to spend some time in center field, a position the former Gold Glover hasn’t played since a 2010 microfracture procedure to repair his right knee.

The knee is the key. Will Carlos Beltran's surgically-repaired knee hold up next year? Will he once again show his good speed, strong power and elite center field defense? Or will he be relegated to the corner outfield and slower days?

Those are crucial questions for his value. Even though he has great plate discipline, it hasn't always translated to great batting averages, and the knee has sapped some of his power as well. He's an interesting sleeper, but he's no definite thing with that knee.

Beltran missed some time due to injury in 2009 and his long-term health outlook is hazy, but he is still one of the best all-around players in the game, with a combination of power, speed, defense and patience that few center fielders can match.
