Injuries cost him about 30 starts and more than 100 plate appearances, yet Holliday was still worth more than 4.0 WAR, placing him among the top 20 in NL value. He played most of the last month and all of October with a serious hand injury yet still managed a .294/.410/.411 postseason line. Since joining St. Louis two years ago, he ranks in the top 10 among NL hitters in average, OBP, slugging, and WAR.

Holliday gave the Cards their money’s worth and then some in year one of his much-discussed seven-year deal. Without any fanfare, he finished the year sixth on the NL leader board in OBP (.390), seventh in slugging (.532), fifth in OPS (.922), and fourth in park-adjusted OPS+ (149).

Holliday was signed to provide "lineup protection" for Albert Pujols. Yeah, right. Pujols is on pace for a career high in intentional walks, and Holliday was so inept with RISP in the first 60 games that he got moved to the No. 2 spot in the order. Holliday started slow last year, then came on very strong after July 1; Cards hoping for same in 2010.

His early career has been vaguely reminiscent of Bobby Abreu’s — extremely high OBP coupled with 25- to 30-homer power. Abreu’s extra-base output dropped sharply as he left his 20s — he hasn’t slugged over .474 since his age-30 season. Another comparable player, Holliday’s former teammate Todd Helton, has followed a path like Abreu’s, spending his entire 30s in 15-homers-a-year territory. You wonder if Holliday might be headed down the same road: His isolated power was only .202 last year, the lowest since his second year in the league. There’d be no disgrace in following this trajectory — Abreu and Helton remain excellent players. But they’re not cleanup hitters anymore.
