The 5’11”, 170-pound rookie was dominant for 30 innings, striking out 10.5 men per nine innings and getting batters to miss nearly a third of the time they swung. A sore shoulder disabled him for the last half of the year. He has rehabbed it without surgery, but the Cardinals will be watching closely this spring to see if Sanchez’s velocity returns to the range (mid-to-high 90s) it occupied before the injury.

An undersized 22-year-old with a big fastball, Sanchez took over the closer duties at Triple-A midway through the season and looked great (1.67 ERA, 10.3 K/9). His control is still a little ragged. The Cardinals tout him as a candidate to close in the big leagues.

Sanchez is a possible big-league closer someday — and may get a whiff of the big leagues in 2010. He is still very young (just turned 21) and has thrown only 50 innings above Class A. He has good movement on his fastball and above-average breaking stuff.
