His ERA, strikeout rate, and K/BB ratio all improved for the third consecutive year, an extremely rare feat. Wainwright set new career bests in wins, ERA, complete games, BB/9, K/9, H/9, and BB/SO in 2010 but grew slightly weary down the stretch (3.83 ERA in his last eight starts), giving rise to whispers that his elbow was barking. Since becoming a full-time starter in 2007 he has the second-best ERA and park-adjusted ERA+ in baseball, trailing only Roy Halladay.
He labored through his first seven starts, posting a 4.35 ERA with 21 walks in 41 innings. Then Carpenter told Wainwright he was throwing too much over the top; Wainwright lowered his arm slot and put up a 2.25 ERA the rest of the way, with just 45 walks in 191 innings. He allowed two runs or fewer in 15 of his 19 starts after July 1 (including Game 2 of the NLDS).
Only three St. Louis pitchers in history have topped the 212 strikeouts Wainwright logged in 2009: Bob Gibson (six times), Carpenter and Sam Jones. The Cardinals control his rights for the next four years at a total cost of $32 million.
Wainwright made such brisk progress in his rehab last summer that he tried to convince the Cardinals to activate him for the postseason, but they didn’t bite. Prior to getting hurt, he had lowered his ERA and increased his K/BB ratio three years in a row. He currently ranks third on the franchise's all-time leaderboard in K/9 and K/BB.
