Posted his worst BB/9 since 2003, and (as per PitchF/X) lost about one mph off his fastball. Westbrook's FIP wasn't so terrible last year, and he's still one of the best groundball inducers in baseball, but the Cards clearly have lost confidence in him.

He's a perfect fit for Dave Duncan and the National League. In addition to posting one of the highest groundball rates in baseball, Westbrook set career highs last year for strikeouts and strikeout rate. His home run rate fell dramatically after the trade. The non-DH league agrees with him.

Westbrook hasn’t pitched for the Indians since early in the 2008 season thanks to Tommy John surgery, but if there’s no further setbacks, he’ll be starting on Opening Day. Westbrook, when he’s on, is an outstanding innings eater, pitching quickly, and getting scores of ground ball outs. As his contract is up after the 2010 season, the Indians will likely trade him by the July 31 deadline if he’s in demand.
