Jose Canseco is not reliable

Just when you think things couldn’t get worse for Jose Canseco, they do:

The Golden Baseball League (GBL) announced today that the Superior Court of the State of California for the County of Los Angeles has officially rendered a judgment in favor of the Golden Baseball League and the Long Beach Armada in their lawsuit versus defendant Jose Canseco for an amount of $258,750 . . .

. . . Canseco was signed to a Uniform Players Contract and a Marketing Agreement by the Long Beach Armada and Golden Baseball League during the summer of 2006 in his attempt to launch a comeback to return to the major leagues as a knuckleball pitcher and designated hitter. After less than half of his contracted time, he was performing poorly as a hitter and pitcher and was having erratic behaviour on and off the field. He chose to abandon his team and his contract leaving unfulfilled obligations.

As if Canseco ever had the temperament to be a knuckleballer anyway. Knuckleballers represent all that is Right and True in the universe. Canseco, in terms of intellect, savvy, guile, and anything else you can name, is basically the anti-knuckleballer.

Not that any of this matters. There’s a term in the law for people like Canseco, and that term is “judgment-proof.” $250K? It may as well be ten dollars or ten million dollars, because Canseco doesn’t have it, and even if he did, he probably wouldn’t pay it.

(thanks to Ron Rollins — chief of the ShysterBall expatriate news bureau — for the heads up)

How can he not have a quarter-million bucks?  Didn’t he write a couple books that sold pretty well?  And he made a bit of scratch over the years hitting a baseball – with his bat and his head.  Could he really have blown all of it?

Well, this is Canseco, so sure he could have, but still…

Maybe the Armada can sic their newest pitcher, Jose Lima, on him (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/2009/03/jose-limas-back.html).

I am one of the biggest Canseco fans & collectors to walk the planet for the past 20 yrs. I very much appreciate your post, I have the largest scrapbooks on him ( among EVERY other collectables thatexist!) in the world, & I print every article & cut every newsclipping on him that I can find for the past 20 yrs, so, lol, I’m grateful for your post. And I must say I am very impressed, that you did not try to trash him like everyone else, despite the fact that he was the ONLY one besides Ken Caminiti to come forward & tell the truth. It takes alot of balls to tell the whole world what it is taht u did wrong, no matter what his motives may have been. TY for being honest and cool.
