Andruw Jones’ batted balls

by Dave Studeman
September 10, 2007

John Beamer has posted a nice article about Andruw Jones today, including some insightful monthly trends. It will be interesting to see if Andruw does command a big contract this offseason.

As a follow up, perhaps some of you would like to take a look at Jones' batted ball profile. I described the batted ball profile format a couple of weeks ago, but space allowed me to only run it for a few players. Well, here's Andruw's profile:

Jones, Andruw

Net Runs per Ball % of Batted Balls %/OF %/PA Total Net Runs
BFP OF LD GB OF% LD% GB% HR K BB OF LD GB IF NIP Tot R/G
2004 646 0.35 0.46 0.03 31% 16% 48% 20% 23% 11% 46.2 31.5 6.3 -2.3 8.9 90.7 5.3
2005 672 0.37 0.44 0.01 37% 16% 42% 28% 17% 12% 65.9 34.1 1.3 -2.5 14.7 113.6 6.4
2006 669 0.36 0.37 0.02 35% 19% 39% 26% 19% 14% 56.1 31.1 4.4 -2.3 18.5 107.9 6.1
2007 529 0.25 0.33 -0.01 40% 17% 37% 15% 22% 12% 35.9 19.4 -1.2 -1.9 9.6 61.7 4.4
Avg. 623 0.33 0.38 0.01 37% 17% 40% 24% 19% 13% 52.7 28.2 1.4 -2.2 14.5 94.5 5.8
vs. MLB 0.14 -0.01 -0.04 6% -3% -4% 13% 2% 3% 26.0 -8.1 -7.3 -0.6 6.1

As expected, Andruw has lost a lot of oomph on his outfield flies (despite hitting more of them), but his line drive production has also declined; in fact, it's declined each of the past four years. Add in lower production on his groundballs and more strikeouts, and you pretty much have a quadruple whammy.

Dave was called a "national treasure" by Rob Neyer. Seriously. Comments about this article can be sent to him through the miracle of e-mail.
