Around the Majors: Delgado update

by Lee Sinins
January 24, 2005

1) The Rangers dropped out of the Carlos Delgado sweepstakes. Delgado's agent says the Mets have dropped out, but they deny that.

2) The Yankees signed free agent INF Rey Sanchez to a 1 year, $600,000 contract.

After -11 RCAA/.662 OPS and -24 RCAA/.570 OPS seasons, Sanchez had a .337 SLG, .281 OBA, .617 OPS, -16 RCAA in 91 games with the Devil Rays. He has a .642 career OPS, compared to his league average of .766, and -244 RCAA in 1467 games.

Sanchez is tied for 10th, among active players, with 10 double digit negative RCAA's--

1 Royce Clayton 11
T2 Jose Vizcaino 10
T2 Benito Santiago 10
T2 Mike Matheny 10
T2 Rey Sanchez 10
T6 Deivi Cruz 8
T6 Brent Mayne 8
T6 Omar Vizquel 8
T6 Alex Gonzalez 8
T6 Brad Ausmus 8
T6 Neifi Perez 8
T6 Sandy Alomar Jr. 8

3) The Astros signed free agent P John Franco to a 1 year, $700,000 contract.

After missing 2002 and having a 2.62 ERA/6 RSAA season, Franco had a 5.28 ERA/-5 RSAA in 52 games with the Mets. He has a 2.84 career ERA, compared to his league average of 3.95, and 154 RSAA in 1088 games.

If you enjoy the ATM reports and want to support them, check out my other creation--the sabermetric baseball encyclopedia. Orders are now being taken for the next edition, which will include the 2004 stats and is currently shipping. It's powerful, yet extremely easy to use. Features extensive sorting, stat display options, and features that are not available in online and printed sources. The deluxe package has been greatly expanded, making it a much better bargain. For more information, see http://www.baseball-encyclopedia.com

According to Peter Gammons, "There is no greater baseball tool than Lee Sinins' Baseball Sabermetric Encyclopedia. Get thee to Baseball Immortals and order the disc, haste post haste." The product Jayson Stark called "the best invention since the toaster oven!" has gotten even more powerful.
