Around the Majors: Devil Rays sign Neagle

by Lee Sinins
February 08, 2005

1) The Devil Rays signed free agent P Denny Neagle to a minor league contract, with an invitation to spring training and re-signed P Trever Miller to a $1.1 million contract, to avoid salary arbitration.

The Rockies released Neagle in December, after he was arrested on solicitation charges. He missed the entire 2004 season, due to Tommy John surgery, after making just 7 starts in 2003. Neagle has a 4.24 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.26, and 56 RSAA in 392, but hasn't had a positive RSAA since 2000.

After a 4.61 ERA/1 RSAA season, Miller had a 3.12 ERA/7 RSAA in 60 games. He has a 4.77 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.53, and -8 RSAA in 244 games.

2) The Astros re-signed Ps Tim Redding ($750,000) and Peter Munro ($700,000) to 1 year contracts, to avoid salary arbitration.

After 5.40 ERA/-9 RSAA and 3.68 ERA/15 RSAA seasons, Redding had a 5.72 ERA/-15 RSAA in 17 starts (27 games). He has a 4.75 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.27, and -15 RSAA in 91 games.

After 3.57 ERA/7 RSAA and 4.67 ERA/-1 RSAA seasons, Munro had a 5.15 ERA/-9 RSAA in 19 starts (21 games). He has a 4.88 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.41, and -13 RSAA in 120 games.

3) According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the Pirates are interested in A's OF Eric Byrnes.

4) The Tigers signed P Mike James to a minor league contract.

James, who hasn't pitched in the majors since 2002, has a 3.67 ERA/36 RSAA in 288 career games.

If you enjoy the ATM reports and want to support them, check out my other creation--the sabermetric baseball encyclopedia. Orders are now being taken for the next edition, which will include the 2004 stats and is currently shipping. It's powerful, yet extremely easy to use. Features extensive sorting, stat display options, and features that are not available in online and printed sources. The deluxe package has been greatly expanded, making it a much better bargain. For more information, see http://www.baseball-encyclopedia.com

According to Peter Gammons, "There is no greater baseball tool than Lee Sinins' Baseball Sabermetric Encyclopedia. Get thee to Baseball Immortals and order the disc, haste post haste." The product Jayson Stark called "the best invention since the toaster oven!" has gotten even more powerful.
