2) Devil Rays CF Rocco Baldelli’s new contract is worth a guaranteed $9 million a year for 3 years and could be $32 million over 6 years.

3) Diamondbacks P Javier Vazquez demanded a trade.

Players with 6+ years of service time who are traded in the middle of a multiyear contract have the right to demand a trade at the end of the subsequent season. If the player isn’t traded by March 15, he would become a free agent. However, no player has ever become a free agent under this rule. In every case, the player has either withdrawn the demand or was traded.

“Lee Sinins’ Sabermetric Encyclopedia is best reason yet developed to own a computer. I think I must own a copy of every baseball encyclopedia there is or ever was, and occasionally I find that I still need to pull out one of the others, but not very often; the Sabermetric Encyclopedia covers 97% of my needs. Whether I’m working or playing, calculating or daydreaming, the Sabermetric Encyclopedia pops up to help out. I turn it on in the morning; I turn it off when the house is on fire. Otherwise, I’m using it.”–Bill James
