Around the Majors: Marlins sign Leiter

1) The Marlins signed free agent P Al Leiter to a 1 year, $8 million contract.

After 3.48 ERA/9 RSAA and 3.99 ERA/5 RSAA seasons, Leiter had a 3.21 ERA/20 RSAA in 30 starts with the Mets. He has a 3.65 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.37, and 143 RSAA in 386 games.

2) The Phillies signed free agent P Jon Lieber to a 3 year, $21 million contract.

After missing the 2003 season, due to Tommy John surgery, Lieber had a 4.33 ERA/2 RSAA in 27 starts with the Yankees. He has a 4.20 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.38, and 25 RSAA in 299 games.

3) The Padres signed free agent P Woody Williams to a 1 year, $3.5 million contract, with an option for 2006.

After 2.53 ERA/15 RSAA and 3.87 ERA/6 RSAA seasons, Williams had a 4.18 ERA/0 RSAA in 31 starts with the Cardinals. He has a 4.05 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.49, and 51 RSAA in 338 games.

4) The Whitesox signed free agent P Dustin Hermanson to a 2 year, $5.5 million contract.

After 5.46 ERA/-4 RSAA and 4.06 ERA/1 RSAA seasons, Hermanson had a 4.53 ERA/-1 RSAA in 47 games (18 starts) with the Giants. He has a 4.31 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.39, and 8 RSAA in 294 games.

5) The Redsox signed free agent P Matt Mantei to a 1 year, $750,000 contract.

After 4.73 ERA/-1 RSAA and 2.62 ERA/13 RSAA seasons, Mantei had a 11.81 ERA/-9 RSAA in 12 games with the Diamondbacks. He has a 3.86 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.37, and 17 RSAA in 281 games.

6) The Nationals sold OF Val Pascucci to the Lotte Mariners, in Japan.

Pascucci had a .290 SLG, .297 OBA, .588 OPS, -5 RCAA in his first 32 career games.

7) The Rangers signed free agent C Sandy Alomar Jr. to a 1 year, $550,000 contract.

After -13 RCAA/.712 OPS and -7 RCAA/.689 OPS seasons, Alomar had a .308 SLG, .298 OBA, .606 OPS, -12 RCAA in 50 games with the Whitesox. He has a .721 career OPS, compared to his league average of .762, and -110 RCAA in 1277 games.

8) The Orioles signed free agent SS Chris Gomez to a minor league contract.

After -9 RCAA/.715 OPS and -13 RCAA/.633 OPS seasons, Gomez hit .346 SLG, .337 OBA, .683 OPS, -11 RCAA in 109 games with the BlueJays. He has a .680 career OPS, compared to his league average of .769, and -137 RCAA in 1189 games.

9) The Brewers signed P Kane Davis, Cs Kelley Gulledge and Jeff Winchester and INF Tony Zuniga to minor league contracts.

Davis, who hasn't pitched in the majors since 2002, has a 6.01 ERA/-10 RSAA in 81 career games.

10) According to NY Newsday, Randy Johnson has told the Diamondbacks he'd only waive his no trade clause to go to the Yankees.

11) According to the Arizona Republic, the Diamondbacks will sign free 3B Troy Glaus to a 4 year, $45 million contract today. Also, the paper reports that free agent CF Steve Finley's agent says the Diamondbacks are the frontrunners for him.

12) According to the Seattle Times, the Mariners and Padres may be working on a Ryan Klesko and Sean Burroughs for Randy Winn and Scott Spiezio trade.

13) The Padres signed free agent 3B Geoff Blum to a 1 year contract.

After 7 RCAA/.807 OPS and -23 RCAA/.674 OPS seasons, Blum had a .348 SLG, .266 OBA, .614 OPS, -20 RCAA in 112 games with the Devil Rays. He has a .715 career OPS, compared to his league average of .778, and -68 RCAA in 682 games.

14) Mark McLemore has retired.

McLemore finished with a .690 career OPS, compared to his league average of .765, and -159 RCAA in 1832 games, including a .328 SLG, .355 OBA, .683 OPS, -7 RCAA in 77 games with the A's.
