Around the Majors: Martinez announces his retirement

1) Mariners DH Edgar Martinez announced his retirement, effective at the end of the season.

After 26 RCAA/.888 OPS and 32 RCAA/.895 OPS seasons, Martinez is hitting .387 SLG, .352 OBA, .740 OPS, 0 RCAA in his first 99 games. He has a .938 career OPS, compared to his league average of .761, and 651 RCAA in 2013 games.

2) Phillies LF Pat Burrell will have season ending wrist surgery on Friday. Phillies GM Ed Wade says he's exploring the trade market to see if he can find another OF.

3) The Reds traded P Cory Lidle to the Phillies for minor leaguers OF Javon Moran and P Joe Wilson and a player to be named later

After 3.89 ERA/17 RSAA and 5.75 ERA/-21 RSAA seasons, Lidle is off to a 5.32 ERA/-23 RSAA start in his first 24 starts. He has a 4.56 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.48, and -8 RSAA in 205 games.

4) The A's placed P Chad Bradford on the 15 day DL and called up P Jairo Garcia.

After 3.11 ERA/13 RSAA and 3.04 ERA/10 RSAA seasons, Bradford is off to a 4.69 ERA/-1 RSAA start in his first 49 games. He has a 3.47 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.55, and 33 RSAA in 275 games.

5) The Whitesox called up P Felix Diaz and sent C Jamie Burke to the minors.

Diaz has a 10.17 ERA/-13 RSAA in his first 5 career starts (6 games).

Burke has 0 RCAA/.795 OPS in 50 career games, including a .458 SLG, .377 OBA, .835 OPS, 1 RCAA in 35 games in 2004.

6) The Tigers placed CF Alex Sanchez on the 15 day DL and called up OF Nook Logan.

Sanchez has a strained right thigh. After -3 RCAA/.701 OPS and -15 RCAA/.681 OPS seasons in his first couple of years as a starter, he has a .386 SLG, .335 OBA, .721 OPS, -6 RCAA in his first 79 games. Sanchez has a .691 career OPS, compared to his league average of .767, and -29 RCAA in 365 games.

Logan has 0 RCAA/.787 OPS in his first 8 career games.

7) The Rangers activated P Doug Brocail from the DL and sent P Rosman Garcia to the minors.

In his first time in the majors since 2000, Brocail is off to a 8.22 ERA/-8 RSAA start in his first 22 games. He has a 4.04 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.42, and 20 RSAA in 360 games.

After starting his career with a 6.02 ERA/-5 RSAA in 46 games in 2003, Garcia is off to a 5.40 ERA/0 RSAA start in his first 4 games.

8) A MRI on Dodgers P Brad Penny showed neither tears nor structural damage in his arm. He left Sunday's game in the first inning, due to s trained biceps, and is only expected to miss one start.

9) The Padres acquired minor league INF Ferdin Tejada from the Yankees.

10) The Indians passed the Whitesox into sole possession of 2nd place in the AL Central.

11) The Angels passed the Rangers into sole possession of 2nd place in the AL West.

12) Tino Martinez tied Ron Cey for 90th place on the all time HR list, with 316.

13) Devil Rays 2B Julio Lugo hit his 50th career HR.

After -9 RCAA/.710 OPS and -2 RCA/.743 OPS seasons, Lugo is hitting .416 SLG, .343 OBA, .760 OPS, 5 RCAA in his first 110 games. He has a .737 career OPS, compared to his league average of .776, and -39 RCAA in 593 games.
