Around the Majors: Padres sign Peavy

by Lee Sinins
March 01, 2005

1) The Padres re-signed P Jake Peavy to a 4 year, $15 million contract, with an option for 2009. They will announce the deal after finalizing an insurance policy.

After starting his career with 4.52 ERA/-8 RSAA and 4.11 ERA/-5 RSAA seasons, Peavy had a 2.27 ERA/31 RSAA in 27 starts. He has a 3.53 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.26, and 18 RSAA in 76 games.

2) The BlueJays signed P Chris Michalak to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Michalak, who hasn't pitched in the majors since 2002, has a 4.66 ERA/3 RSAA in 53 games.

3) Diamondbacks SS Jerry Gil will have arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn medial meniscus in his right knee. He's expected to be out anywhere from 4 weeks to 4 months.

Gil had a .221 SLG, .182 OBA, .403 OPS, -12 RCAA in 29 games in 2004.

4) The Nippon Ham Fighters signed P Brad Thomas.

Thomas has a 9.89 ERA/-15 RSAA in 11 career games, including a 16.88 ERA/-4 RSAA in 3 games with the 2004 Twins.

NOTE--There was no ATM report yesterday, due to a lack of news.

If you enjoy the ATM reports and want to support them, check out my other creation--the sabermetric baseball encyclopedia. Orders are now being taken for the next edition, which will include the 2004 stats and is currently shipping. It's powerful, yet extremely easy to use. Features extensive sorting, stat display options, and features that are not available in online and printed sources. The deluxe package has been greatly expanded, making it a much better bargain. For more information, see http://www.baseball-encyclopedia.com

According to Peter Gammons, "There is no greater baseball tool than Lee Sinins' Baseball Sabermetric Encyclopedia. Get thee to Baseball Immortals and order the disc, haste post haste." The product Jayson Stark called "the best invention since the toaster oven!" has gotten even more powerful.
