Around the Majors: Redsox are a win away from a sweep

by Lee Sinins
October 26, 2004

1) Yesterday's score--

Redsox 4, Cardinals 1 (Redsox lead the series, 3-0)

2) Today's schedule--

Redsox (Derek Lowe, 5.42) at Cardinals (Jason Marquis, 3.71), 8:25

3) Yesterday's HRs--

Manny Ramirez
Larry Walker

4) Dodgers LF Jayson Werth has torn ligaments in his elbow. He may need surgery and, if he does, GM Paul DePodesta says Werth will be out for "a good part" of 2005.

In his first year with more than 26 games, Werth hit .486 SLG, .338 OBA, .825 OPS, 9 RCAA in 89 games. He has 5 RCAA/.790 OPS in 130 career games.

5) The A's hired Rene Lachemann as bench coach.

6) Bobby Avila died yesterday, at the age of 78.

Avila was a 2B for the 1949-58 Indians and 3 teams in 1959. He had a .747 career OPS, compared to his league average of .740, and 38 RCAA in 1300 games. His best year was 1954, when he hit .477 SLG, .402 OBA, .880 OPS, 37 RCAA in 143 games and finished 5th in the AL in RCAA.

7) On Monday, former commissioner Bowie Kuhn had open heart surgery.

If you enjoy the ATM reports and want to support them, check out my other creation--the sabermetric baseball encyclopedia. Orders are now being taken for the next edition, which will include the 2004 stats and come out in October. It's powerful, yet extremely easy to use. Features extensive sorting, stat display options, and features that are not available in online and printed sources. The deluxe package has been greatly expanded and could include a free copy of the current edition. For more information, see http://www.baseball-encyclopedia.com

According to Peter Gammons, "There is no greater baseball tool than Lee Sinins' Baseball Sabermetric Encyclopedia. Get thee to Baseball Immortals and order the disc, haste post haste." The product Jayson Stark called "the best invention since the toaster oven!" has gotten even more powerful.
