2) The Red Sox traded OF Jay Payton and cash to the A’s for P Chad Bradford.

Payton had been removed from the 25 and 40 man rosters when the Red Sox designated him for assignment on July 7. Since Payton wasn’t on the 25 man roster and Bradford is being taken off the DL and will be added to it, that’s why the Red Sox dropped 2 players and only added 1 in the prior note.

7) Mickey Owen died yesterday, at the age of 89.

Owen was a C for 4 teams from 1937-45, 1949-51 and 1954. He’s most known for helping the Yankees win the 1941 World Series. While catching for the Dodgers, he missed a 3rd strike with Tommy Henrich in Game 4, which would have tied the series at 2-2. The Yankees put together a rally to take a 3-1 lead in the Series and then won it in the next game.
