Around the Majors: Schilling will have surgery

by Lee Sinins
October 30, 2004

1) Redsox P Curt Schilling will have surgery on his right ankle this week, as long as a MRI shows there's no problems with an infection.

After 3.23 ERA/36 RSAA and 2.95 ERA/34 RSAA seasons, Schilling had a 3.26 ERA/42 RSAA in 32 starts. He has a 3.32 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.22, and 327 RSAA in 482 games.

Schilling ranks 9th on the all time list for career RSAA after the age of 30--

RSAA
1 Randy Johnson 444
2 Lefty Grove 433
3 Cy Young 403
4 Roger Clemens 309
5 Grover C Alexander 263
6 Kevin Brown 262
7 Dazzy Vance 258
8 Greg Maddux 255
9 Curt Schilling 244
10 Phil Niekro 241

2) Angels GM Bill Stoneman says the team won't bid on free agent 3B Troy Glaus and instead will hand over the job to Dallas McPherson.

3) According to ESPN's Peter Gammons, the Whitesox may be close to agreeing to a 2 year, $8 million contract with SS Omar Vizquel.

Vizquel will be a free agent, but hasn't hit the open market yet. Teams, other than the Indians, are not permitted to talk contract terms now. But, by their own admission, MLB rules are only enforceable when they feel like it.

If you enjoy the ATM reports and want to support them, check out my other creation--the sabermetric baseball encyclopedia. Orders are now being taken for the next edition, which will include the 2004 stats and come out in October. It's powerful, yet extremely easy to use. Features extensive sorting, stat display options, and features that are not available in online and printed sources. The deluxe package has been greatly expanded and could include a free copy of the current edition. For more information, see http://www.baseball-encyclopedia.com

According to Peter Gammons, "There is no greater baseball tool than Lee Sinins' Baseball Sabermetric Encyclopedia. Get thee to Baseball Immortals and order the disc, haste post haste." The product Jayson Stark called "the best invention since the toaster oven!" has gotten even more powerful.
