Around the Majors: Signings

by Lee Sinins
January 18, 2005

1) The Twins re-signed P J.C. Romero to a 2 year contract, with an option for 2007, to avoid salary arbitration, and signed free agent 3B Eric Munson to a minor league contract, with an invitation to spring training.

After 1.89 ERA/22 RSAA and 5.00 ERA/-3 RSAA seasons, Romero had a 3.51 ERA/10 RSAA in 74 games. He has a 4.49 career OPS, compared to his league average of 4.60, and 8 RSAA in 259 games.

After 1 RCAA/.753 OPS in 2003, his first season with more than 18 games, Munson hit .445 SLG, .289 OBA, .735 OPS, -5 RCAA in 109 games. He spent his entire career with the Tigers, before being nontendered. Munson has a .701 career OPS, compared to his league average of .767, and -16 RCAA in 246 games.

2) The Nationals re-signed P Tony Armas to a 1 year, $2.26 million contract, to avoid salary arbitration.

Armas had season ending surgery in May 2003 and didn't make his 2004 debut until June. He has a 4.21 ERA/17 RSAA in 102 career games, including a 4.88 ERA/-6 RSAA in 16 starts in 2004.

3) According to the St. Petersburg Times, the Devil Rays are close to signing free agent 2B Roberto Alomar.

If you enjoy the ATM reports and want to support them, check out my other creation--the sabermetric baseball encyclopedia. Orders are now being taken for the next edition, which will include the 2004 stats and is currently shipping. It's powerful, yet extremely easy to use. Features extensive sorting, stat display options, and features that are not available in online and printed sources. The deluxe package has been greatly expanded, making it a much better bargain. For more information, see http://www.baseball-encyclopedia.com

According to Peter Gammons, "There is no greater baseball tool than Lee Sinins' Baseball Sabermetric Encyclopedia. Get thee to Baseball Immortals and order the disc, haste post haste." The product Jayson Stark called "the best invention since the toaster oven!" has gotten even more powerful.
