Around the Majors: Signings

by Lee Sinins
January 21, 2005

1) The Braves re-signed 2B Marcus Giles to a 1 year, $2.35 million contract, to avoid salary arbitration.

After -6 RCAA/.714 OPS and 43 RCAA/.917 OPS seasons, Giles hit .443 SLG, .378 OBA, .821 OPS, 13 RCAA in 102 games. He has a .834 career OPS, compared to his league average of .773, and 45 RCAA in 383 games.

2) The Dodgers signed Ps Kelly Wunsch, Aquilino Lopez, Ryan Rupe and Buddy Carlyle to minor league contracts, with invitations to spring training.

Wunsch has a 3.64 ERA/19 RSAA in 212 career games, including a 0.00 ERA/1 RSAA in 3 games with the 2004 Whitesox. Lopez has a 3.99 ERA/9 RSAA in 90 career games, including a 6.00 ERA/-2 RSAA in 18 games with the 2004 BlueJays. Rupe has a 5.85 ERA/-63 RSAA in 89 career games. Carlyle has a 7.08 ERA/-13 RSAA in 11 career games.

3) The Cubs announced their nonroster invitees to spring training--INFs Danny Klassen and Cody Ransom, OFs Peter Bergeron, Angel Echevarria, Adam Greenberg, Calvin Murray and Rene Reyes, Cs Casey Kopitzke and Jose Reyes and Ps Chad Fox, Scott Williamson, Jimmy Anderson, Eddie Oropesa, Raul Valdez and Jermaine Van Buren.

If you enjoy the ATM reports and want to support them, check out my other creation--the sabermetric baseball encyclopedia. Orders are now being taken for the next edition, which will include the 2004 stats and is currently shipping. It's powerful, yet extremely easy to use. Features extensive sorting, stat display options, and features that are not available in online and printed sources. The deluxe package has been greatly expanded, making it a much better bargain. For more information, see http://www.baseball-encyclopedia.com

According to Peter Gammons, "There is no greater baseball tool than Lee Sinins' Baseball Sabermetric Encyclopedia. Get thee to Baseball Immortals and order the disc, haste post haste." The product Jayson Stark called "the best invention since the toaster oven!" has gotten even more powerful.
