Around the Majors: Yankees advance to the ALCS

by Lee Sinins
October 09, 2004

1) Yesterday's scores--

Astros 8, Braves 5 (Astros lead the series, 2-1)
Yankees 6, Twins 5 (11) (YANKEES WIN THE SERIES, 3-1)
Dodgers 4, Cardinals 0 (Cardinals lead the series, 2-1)

2) Today's schedule--

Braves (Russ Ortiz, 4.13) at Astros (Roger Clemens, 2.98), 1:00
Cardinals (Jeff Suppan, 4.16) at Dodgers (Odalis Perez, 3.25), 8:10

3) Yesterday's HRs--

Shawn Green--2
Johnny Estrada
Andruw Jones
Carlos Beltran
Ruben Sierra
Henry Blanco

4) Redsox P Curt Schilling has an ankle injury and met with an ankle and foot specialist. Manager Terry Francona says it's just tendinitis and won't be a factor.

After 3.23 ERA/36 RSAA and 2.95 ERA/34 RSAA seasons, Schilling had a 3.26 ERA/42 RSAA in 32 starts. He has a 3.32 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.22, and 327 RSAA in 482 games.

5) Braves P John Thomson had to leave yesterday's game, in the 1st inning, due to stained oblique muscle. He says that if Braves advance, his season is still over.

After 4.71 ERA/-1 RSAA and 4.85 ERA/4 RSAA seasons, Thomson had a 3.72 ERA/13 RSAA in 33 starts. He has a 4.71 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.31, and 33 RSAA in 179 games (he's spent a lot of time in Coors).

6) The Rockies removed P Luis Martinez from the 40 man roster.

If you enjoy the ATM reports and want to support them, check out my other creation--the sabermetric baseball encyclopedia. Orders are now being taken for the next edition, which will include the 2004 stats and come out in October. It's powerful, yet extremely easy to use. Features extensive sorting, stat display options, and features that are not available in online and printed sources. The deluxe package has been greatly expanded and could include a free copy of the current edition. For more information, see http://www.baseball-encyclopedia.com

According to Peter Gammons, "There is no greater baseball tool than Lee Sinins' Baseball Sabermetric Encyclopedia. Get thee to Baseball Immortals and order the disc, haste post haste." The product Jayson Stark called "the best invention since the toaster oven!" has gotten even more powerful.
