Around the Majors: Yankees sign Pavanoby Lee SininsDecember 18, 2004 1) The Yankees signed free agent P Carl Pavano to a 4 year, $39.95 million contract, with an option for 2009. After 5.16 ERA/-17 RSAA and 4.30 ERA/-7 RSAA seasons, Pavano had a career year, with a 3.00 ERA/27 RSAA in 31 starts with the Marlins. He has a 4.21 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.33, and -4 RSAA in 167 games. 2) The Redsox signed free agent P Matt Clement to a 3 year, million contract, for about $23.5-25.5 million, with an official announcement coming early next week. After 3.60 ERA/9 RSAA and 4.11 ERA/3 RSAA seasons, Clement had a 3.68 ERA/18 RSAA in 30 starts with the Cubs. It was the first time he had a double digit RSAA and he has a 4.34 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.38, and -10 RSAA in 194 games. 3) The Dodgers are reportedly very close to signing free agent INF Jose Valentin. 4) The Giants re-signed free agent P Jason Christiansen to a 1 year, $1.5 million contract, with an option for 2006. After 5.40 ERA/-1 RSAA (just 6 G) and 5.19 ERA/-3 RSAA seasons, Christiansen had a 4.50 ERA/0 RSAA in 60 games. He has a 4.20 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.33, and 6 RSAA in 460 games. 5) The Mets claimed OF Ron Calloway off waivers from the Nationals. 6) The Whitesox re-signed RF Timo Perez to a 1 year, $1 million contract, to avoid salary arbitration. After 1 RCAA/.768 OPS and -15 RCAA/.665 OPS seasons, Perez had a .338 SLG, .285 OBA, .623 OPS, -22 RCAA in 103 games. He has a .691 career OPS, compared to his league average of .771, and -48 RCAA in 475 games. 7) The Rockies claimed INF Alfredo Amezaga off waivers from the Angels. 8) The Marlins signed INF Wilson Delgado, C Mike DiFelice and P Chad Bentz to minor league contracts, with invitations to spring training. Delgado has -27 RCAA/.627 OPS in 253 career games, including a .385 SLG, .366 OBA, .750 OPS, 1 RCAA in 42 games with the 2004 Mets. DiFelice has -87 RCAA/.651 OPS in 501 career games, including a .200 SLG, .214 OBA, .414 OPS, -4 RCAA in 17 games with the 2004 Tigers and Cubs. Bentz had just been released by the Nationals. 9) The Rangers re-signed free agents OF David Dellucci (2 year, $2.5 million) and signed free agent 1B Greg Colbrunn (minor league contract, with an invitation to spring training). After -10 RCAA/.727 OPS and -9 RCAA/.665 OPS seasons, Dellucci hit .441 SLG, .342 OBA, .783 OPS, -3 RCAA in 107 games. He has a .757 career OPS, compared to his league average of .771, and -20 RCAA in 648 games. Colbrunn hasn't played more than 22 games in a season since 2002. He has 11 RCAA/.799 OPS in 992 career games, including a .111 SLG, .143 OBA, .254 OPS, -5 RCAA in 20 games with the 2004 Diamondbacks. 10) The Marlins reworked the contract for P Antonio Alfonseca, after his physical showed a herniated disc in his back. The contract was originally for $2 million, but now it's for the league minimum ($320,000), with incentives that could bring it back to $2 million. 11) On Thursday, Bobby Mattick died at the age of 89. Mattick had -44 RCAA/.550 OPS in 206 games, as a SS, with the 1938-40 Cubs and 1941-42 Reds. He also managed the 1980-81 BlueJays. 12) The Indians signed INF Jose Morban, utilityman Mike Kinkade and Ps Denny Stark and Chad Zerbe to minor league contracts, with invitations to spring training. Morban had -7 RCAA/.412 OPS in 61 games with the 2003 Orioles. Kinkade has -3 RCAA/.749 OPS in 222 career games. Stark has a 5.78 ERA/-23 RSAA in 64 career games, including a 11.42 ERA/-18 RSAA in 6 starts with the 2004 Rockies. Zerbe had a 3.87 ERA/2 RSAA in 114 games with the 2000-03 Giants. 13) The Reds signed P Jared Fernandez to a minor league contract, with an invitation to spring training. Fernandez has a 4.75 ERA/-4 RSAA in 33 career games, including a 54.00 ERA/-6 RSAA in 2 games (1 start) with the 2004 Astros. 14) The Devil Rays signed 3B Brandon Larson to a minor league contract, with an invitation to spring training. Larson has -20 RCAA/.570 OPS in 109 career games, including a .339 SLG, .304 OBA, .643 OPS, -4 RCAA in a career high 40 games with the 2004 Reds.
