Jason Schmidt won in his return to the majors by holding the Reds to three first-inning runs over five innings on MOnday.
Schmidt allowed five hits, walked three and hit a batter. He struck out just two. Considering that he was facing one of baseball's worst lineups, it wasn't an outing that should get fantasy leaguers excited about him. Still, it is nice to see that all of his hard work paid off, for one night at least. While it's tough to feel sorry for people making $16 million per year, he's been through an awful lot these last few seasons.

Matt Holliday went 4-for-5 with two homers and six RBI as the Athletics battled back from a 10-run deficit to defeat the Twins 14-13 on Monday night.
It was a monster game for Holliday, who also doubled twice and scored four times. Holliday's seventh-inning grand slam tied the game at 13 before Jack Cust delivered a go-ahead solo shot to complete Oakland's dramatic comeback. The Twins nearly came back to tie the game in the ninth but Michael Cuddyer was called out at home on an extremely controversial play for the final out. The huge night raises Holliday's OPS from 795 to 830.

Mets COO Jeff Wilpon has assured both GM Omar Minaya and manager Jerry Manuel that their jobs are safe for the remainder of this season.
The dreaded "votes of confidence" apparently took place in a closed-door meeting last month. The Mets are playing horrible baseball right now, but that has more to do with injuries than it does management. Minaya has a three-year extension that goes into effect at the conclusion of this season, and Manuel inked a two-year contract last October.

According to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post, Fernando Nieve has a torn muscle in his right thigh and will miss at least six weeks.
At some point you have to start feeling sorry for the Metropolitans. They're dealing with all sorts of question marks on the injury front. Nieve was 3-3 with a 2.95 ERA in 36 2/3 innings over seven starts and one relief appearance, but now can't be counted on until September, at the earliest.

Braves recalled RHP Tommy Hanson from Triple-A Gwinnett.
Hanson was demoted to the minors before the All-Star break as the Braves scrambled to add bullpen depth. He was 4-0 with a 2.85 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP in eight starts during the months of June and July, and is getting the nod Monday against the Giants. Activate him immediately.

Chris Ray, on the disabled list with right biceps tendinitis, is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Friday with Double-A Bowie.
Ray has been on the disabled list since July 6. He showed improvement during a throwing program at the Orioles' spring training complex and will have a few weeks at the minor league level to prove his health. This idea involves a whole lot of "ifs," but the right-hander could potentially take over closing duties in Baltimore near the end of the season if both George Sherrill and Danys Baez are traded.

An MRI of Scott Olsen's right shoulder Monday revealed "labrum issues," according to the Washington Times.
Uh oh. "Any time you hear that word (labrum), we figure that's going to be a while," interim manager Jim Riggleman said Sunday. "From hearing the word labrum, that tells you it's going to be a while before he pitches." Olsen might not make it back this season and could require major surgery eventually.

Athletics placed first baseman Jason Giambi on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right quadriceps muscle.
Giambi has struggled with a bruised elbow as well and seen his batting average dip to .193. Two weeks off should do him some good, both mentally and physically. Daric Barton was called up to replace him and should get a decent amount of playing time. AL-only leaguers might want to make a roster addition.

Chien-Ming Wang failed to complete a routine game of catch Monday after feeling tenderness in his right biceps muscle.
Wang has been sidelined since July 4 with a right shoulder strain, and now the Yankees have to practice extra patience. "It's not exactly the news that I wanted," manager Joe Girardi said. "We were hoping two weeks' rest would be enough for him to get on a throwing program. Does it mean he won't pitch this year? No, I'm not saying that. But obviously, it's not going to be as soon as we thought." Sergio Mitre might stick around in the starting rotation a bit longer than previously thought.

Standings

The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.
