Willy Taveras went 3-for-10 and scored the go-ahead run on Troy Tulowitzki's double as the Rockies beat the Padres 2-1 in 22 innings on Thursday. Fatigue seemed to set in at the last. Taveras reached base on an error from Khalil Greene with two outs in the 22nd, reached third on a throwing error after stealing second and then scored on Tulo's gapper. Matt Holliday was the other offensive star for Colorado, going 3-for-6 with three walks. Brad Hawpe and Tadahito Iguchi had the most hitless at-bats, each finishing 0-for-7. Amazingly, neither team had to turn to a starting pitcher in the contest. Kip Wells was the winner for Colorado after going four scoreless. The unearned run Glendon Rusch allowed in his third inning made him the loser. In all, there were 37 strikeouts and 25 hits in the contest. It was the longest game since Aug. 31, 1993, when Minnesota beat Cleveland 5-4 in 22 innings.

John Smoltz fanned 10 in five innings and combined with four relievers on a shutout of the Marlins on Thursday. It looked like Florida was conceding this one from the get go with Jeremy Hermida and Dan Uggla out of the lineup. Smoltz allowed just three hits before leaving with a 6-0 lead, and Will Ohman, Chris Resop, Manny Acosta and Buddy Carlyle all turned in hitless innings out of the pen. In all, the five pitches struck out 16 batters. Smoltz is now just four strikeouts away from 3,000 for his career.

Carlos Pena is being called day-to-day with tightness in his right hamstring. Good news. If Pena can't play on Friday, the Rays will likely have the entire trio of Eric Hinske, Jonny Gomes and Nathan Haynes in the lineup.

Prince Fielder had a game-tying RBI double in the top of the eighth and a go-ahead two-run homer in the 10th to lead the Brewers to a 5-3 win over the Cardinals on Thursday. Fielder's first homer of the year was worth the wait, as he yanked one down the right-field line off Brad Thompson to help the Brewers avoid being swept. Eric Gagne was shaky in the bottom of the 10th, but he got out of the inning without a run scoring. Of guys coming off 50-homer seasons, Fielder took the longest to hit his first homer the next year since his father in 1991. Cecil hit his first bomb on April 18 of that year, though that was in just his ninth game of the season. Prince's homer came in his 15th game and 54th official at-bat.

Miguel Tejada admitted to Astros GM Ed Wade that he is actually 33, two years older than listed in his baseball records. Like many poor kids from Caribbean countries, Tejada was encouraged to lie about his age when he signed with the Oakland A's in 1993. The interesting thing is that all his legal papers in the United States reflect his actual birthday. It's doubtful that any team that's thought about acquiring him over the years is particularly surprised by this news.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.

Game of the Day
I love to read boxscores of extra-inning, low-scoring games, because there are always some remarkable pitching heroes—long relief guys that you typically don’t hear much about. The Rockies’ 2-1 win over the Padres in 22 innings yesterday was no exception. Will Ledezma pitched five innings of shutout ball for the Pads, and Kip Wells tossed four innings of one-hit ball (and earned the win) for the Rockies. And the two starters, Jeff Francis and Jake Peavy, pitched shutout ball for seven and eight innings, respectively.
