THT Daily: 300 and 2,000by Dave StudemanJune 14, 2009 Major League News for June 14Player News Yesterday’s Results Today’s Games Standings Top Minor League Performances You can always find the most recent THT Daily at http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/content/thtdaily/ Player NewsPlayer Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldJason Marquis tossed seven innings of one-run ball as the Rockies topped the Mariners 5-3 on Saturday night. The Rockies have won 10 straight games, improving to 30-32 with tonight's victory. Marquis ate innings yet again and almost grabbed his ninth win of the season. Unfortunately, Manny Corpas blew an eighth-inning lead and Marquis was denied a piece in the final decision. He'll carry an 8-4 record, 3.77 ERA and 1.35 WHIP into next week's outing against the Pirates. Torii Hunter blasted three homers for the first time in his career Saturday as the Angels rolled over the Padres 9-1. Hunter homered in back-to-back-to-back at-bats, providing all the offense the Angels would need as Joe Saunders tossed another effective eight innings. Hunter is killing it this season, with a .321 batting average, 16 home runs and 49 RBI in 209 at-bats. It has truly been a pleasant surprise. Lance Berkman hit his 300th career home run on Saturday evening as the Astros defeated the Diamondbacks. Berkman's blast came in the sixth inning, minutes after Miguel Tejada collected his 2,000th career hit. He lined the shot into the right field seats and became just the seventh switch-hitter in major league history to eclipse 300 career home runs. "Big Puma" is batting .255 this season with 12 homers and 35 RBI in 205 at-bats. According to MLB.com, Jason Isringhausen (elbow) will be placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday. Izzy is expected to miss a significant chunk of time, and may never return to the Rays. "It's just really unfortunate because he was throwing the ball really well," said fellow reliever Randy Choate. "He had his curveball back. He looked really good the last couple times out. You feel for a guy like that when that happens." Look for a corresponding move Sunday morning. Kahlil Greene is nearing activation from the 15-day disabled list. The Cardinals were happy enough with the progress he made in two games for Triple-A Memphis that they flew him back to St. Louis for the weekend. "That was a positive opportunity for him to do, to get in some games," GM John Mozeliak said. "... We want to reassess where he stands and look at (activating him), at some point." He's been out since late May with anxiety-related issues. Gary Sheffield will undergo an MRI on his right knee in the next couple of days, according to the Newark Star-Ledger's Brian Costa. Sheffield has seen a major boost in playing time over the past month or so, and has sported a noticeable limp on occasion. We'll have an update as soon as more information is available. The 40-year-old is batting .261/.381/.478 with seven home runs and 24 RBI in 134 at-bats this season. He belted his 505th career home run Friday. Astros activated RHP Jose Valverde from the 15-day disabled list. Valverde spent close to two months on the disabled list with a calf ailment. He'll be available to pitch Saturday night, but manager Cecil Cooper has already indicated that he wants Valverde to pitch in at least one non-save situation before throwing him back into the fire. Taylor Buchholz was unable to complete a bullpen session Saturday evening after feeling tightness in his right elbow. Buchholz could be headed for Tommy John surgery. He's been out all season with elbow discomfort, and plain old rehab doesn't seem to be working. Look for a decision next week. "He'll get together with our medical people and weigh the different options that are in front of us right now," said manager Jim Tracy. "And then we'll go from there." Albert Pujols finished 3-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs Saturday as the Cardinals defeated the Indians 3-1. Pujols' first dinger in the fourth inning brought his career hit total to 1,600, and his second blast tied him for the lead in the National League home run race. There's just no stopping him. "El Hombre" is batting .329 with 22 homers, 57 RBI and 50 runs scored in 216 at-bats this season. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength.
