Player NewsPlayer Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldJarrod Saltalamacchia went 4-for-6 with two homers, seven RBI and five runs as the Rangers set an American League record with 30 runs scored Wednesday in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Orioles. The O's were up 3-0 after three, but the Rangers scored five runs in the fourth, nine in the sixth, 10 in the eighth and then six in the ninth in the most runs scored in a game in the modern era. Ramon Vazquez joined Salty with two homers and seven RBI, and Marlon Byrd and Travis Metcalf contributed grand slams. David Murphy had five hits and five runs scored. After Daniel Cabrera left, Orioles relievers Brian Burres, Rob Bell and Paul Shuey combined to give up 24 runs and throw 156 pitches in four innings. It ended up being an easy win for Kason Gabbard, who allowed three runs in six innings, and an even easier save for Wes Littleton, who pitched three scoreless innings. The Rangers scored more runs than they did in their previous nine games combined. Brandon Webb's 42-inning scoreless streak was snapped in the first inning Wednesday, but he still won a sixth straight start after allowing two runs in seven innings against the Brewers. Leadoff man Gabe Gross singled, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and then scored on Prince Fielder's single to halt Webb's incredible streak. Webb, though, didn't get discouraged. He allowed just one more run in sixth and won after the Diamondbacks went up 3-2 in the seventh. Brandon Lyon and Jose Valverde protected the one-run lead with scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively. Albert Pujols homered in a career-high fifth straight game to help lead the Cardinals to a 6-4 win over the Marlins on Wednesday. Yadier Molina also went deep for St. Louis. Pujols' 30th homer was a two-run blast -- his first non-solo shot of the streak -- off Scott Olsen. He extended his record of 30-homer seasons to begin a career to seven. He leads the NL with 14 home runs since the break. Edgar Renteria aggravated his injured ankle in his first at-bat Wednesday in his return from the disabled list and had to leave the game against the Reds. He didn't even get a chance to put a ball in play before being replaced by Yunel Escobar during his at-bat. It looked like enough of a setback to perhaps put him back on the disabled list. Escobar will keep filling in for him. Gary Sheffield will rest his sore right shoulder on Wednesday night and said he might need to go on the disabled list. Sheffield hasn't driven in a run in six games, and he's hitting .185 with one homer this month. "It's time for me to shut it down and get myself right," he said. "I'm doing myself and my team a disservice (by playing)." Marcus Thames and Cameron Maybin both figure to play regularly while Sheffield is out. Phillies placed LHP Cole Hamels on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 17, with a strained left elbow. While the Phillies said that it was possible Hamels would miss just one start, it appears they intended to put him on the DL all along. An MRI reportedly showed no ligament damage, which is good news. To replace Hamels, the Phillies have decided to start Fabio Castro on Thursday. Shane Victorino returned from the DL to fill the open roster spot. Chris Young will see a specialist after developing back tightness during his start Tuesday against the Mets. The Padres believe that the back tightness is related to the strained left oblique that he suffered on July 24 against Colorado. Young is expected to miss at least one start because of the problem. Wilfredo Ledezma is the favorite to fill in for him Sunday.
