He slid for the ball, but it went off his glove and he slammed into the fence and banged his right knee. The ball bounced away, and McPherson circled the bases while Roberts was unable to get up. After the play, he was lifted onto a stretcher and taken to a nearby hospital for precautionary X-rays. The Mets placed left fielder Cliff Floyd on the disabled list due to a sprained left ankle. The Reds put LHP Brandon Claussen on the 15-day DL with a sore shoulder. Top Dodgers third base prospect Andy LaRoche has a slight labrum tear in his throwing shoulder, according to an MRI. He will rest for ten days before a decision regarding surgery is made. LaRoche hit .309 with nine home runs and 46 RBIs in 62 games at AA Jacksonville and was hitting .333 with two home runs and four RBIs in four games at AAA Las Vegas. Gary Matthews Jr. had a big game for the Rangers. He robbed Shawn Green of a home run in the fourth, then hit a two-run HR in the bottom of the inning. He also stole second and scored in the first and went 2 for 4. He's batting 15-for-32 (.469) in his last seven games. Juan Encarnacion has been batting cleanup regularly since Albert Pujols went on the 15-day disabled list on June 4 with a strained right side muscle and is 17-for-37 (.459) with nine RBI during a nine-game hitting streak. Cardinals SS David Eckstein missed his second straight game with a mild concussion. Manager Tony La Russa said Eckstein was will probably start Sunday. What a difference from last year: Alex Gonzalez tied a Red Sox record with his 48th straight game without an error. The Angels' Orlando Cabrera walked in the first inning to extend his streak of reaching base safely to a franchise-record 47 straight games, the longest current streak in the majors. Troy Glaus started at shortstop for the third time this season. Mariners OF Ichiro Suzuki singled to extend his hitting streak to 17 games, second-longest in the AL this season behind his 18-game streak last month. The Phillies' Scott Mathieson made his major league debut, giving up four runs in six innings against Tampa Bay. Carlos Marmol allowed four runs and seven hits against Detroit in six innings in his second major league start. A.J. Burnett, on the 60-day DL with right elbow discomfort, will make a rehab start Saturday night. The Blue Jays hope he can rejoin the team and pitch Thursday at Atlanta. Brewers RHP Ben Sheets (right shoulder tendinitis) threw 70 pitches in a bullpen session on Saturday. He said there's still no timetable for his return, saying that it is unlikely he'll come back before the All-Star break. Mark Prior will make his first start of the season today against the Detroit Tigers. Kerry Wood might pitch a simulated game in Cleveland and could be ready as soon as next weekend. Arizona's Luis Gonzalez has gone 183 at-bats without a homer. He hit 57 in 2001. According to the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, the Pirates will begin contracts talks with Sean Casey soon. They would prefer to have something in place prior to the July 31 trading deadline. Oh, Clint! Earlier this week, Cory Sullivan set a major league record with seven sacrifice bunts in two straight games (Wednesday's and Thursday's games). THT's StatsGross Production Average (GPA) is a simple combination of OBP and SLG that is more telling than OPS (OBP plus SLG). Following the lead of Moneyball, GPA gives greater weight to OBP (80% more than SLG) and is calculated to look very similar to the scale of Batting Average. In other words, it’s a very effective and simple batting “rate stat.” Here are the top twenty major league batters according to GPA.
