THT Daily: All-Star injuriesby Matthew CarruthJuly 05, 2007 Major League News for July 5Today’s LinksPlayer News Yesterday’s Results Today’s Games Standings Game of the Day Top Minor League Performances You can always find the most recent THT Daily at http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/content/thtdaily/ THT LinksWaste of time - Indians reliever Rafael Betancourt was cited for taking more than 12 seconds to throw his pitch twice during yesterday's Indians-Tigers game. While this rule seems inconsistently applied, it's always nice when pitchers work quickly. New York misery - The Rockies finished a three-game sweep of the Mets with a 17-7 win last night, becoming the first team in over 50 years to sweep both the Mets and the Yankees in the same season. Now granted, since interleague play hasn't been around that long, that's not as impressive as it sounds, but it's still pretty cool. THT Links represents the best efforts of our editors in scouring the various tubes of the interweb for both relevant and irrelevant news items. If you have happened upon a story that we have overlooked or wish to give feedback of any sort, please notify us at THT Links. Player NewsPlayer Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldAgent Jeff Berry said Wednesday night that Mark Buehrle will not sign a proposed four-year, $56 million contract with the White Sox unless it includes complete no-trade protection. Smart. Berry also said that if Buehrle is traded, the pitcher will decline any offer of a contract extension from the team that acquires him and exercise his right to become a free agent at the end of the season. The White Sox are offering Buehrle a no-trade clause for the rest of 2007 and 2008 only. If they want to keep him, they'll have to go all the way, apparently. Devil Rays placed RHP Al Reyes on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 3, with a strained rotator cuff. Reyes has struggled recently and has a long history of arm problems, but was 17-for-18 converting saves. The Devil Rays are hoping he can return when eligible on July 18. Left-hander Jon Switzer was called up to replace him on the roster, but doesn't figure to be in the mix for save chances. Gary Glover is seemingly the favorite to take over ninth-inning duties, but he's about as likely to hurt fantasy teams as help them over the next two weeks. John Smoltz confirmed Wednesday that he'll sit out the All-Star Game because of his sore right shoulder. Smoltz, who will have his shoulder examined Thursday, plans on making his next start July 17 in the Braves' fifth game back after the All-Star break. Jo-Jo Reyes looks like the top candidate to start in his place on Saturday. Though his strained hamstring didn't cause him to miss any games for the Yankees, Alex Rodriguez is considering sitting out the All-Star Game next week. "I told the guys I'll let them know Saturday ... but if I feel like this, probably not," Rodriguez said when asked if he would play. As expected, A-Rod DHed Wednesday against the Twins. Mike Sweeney will have arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Thursday. No details were released. If it's just a routine cleanup, Sweeney could be back in a month. Still, by that time, the Royals might decide they're better off playing Billy Butler regularly. Butler, who was supposed to return to the minors if Sweeney came back this week, should now get a chance to take over as the full-time DH, making him a fine play in AL-only leagues. Troy Glaus' status is uncertain after X-rays on his injured left foot. "They took some X-rays and they were inconclusive," manager John Gibbons said. "He'll get checked out tomorrow. We'll know more then." Glaus will get at least one day to rest with the Jays off Thursday. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Cameron had doubled to lead off the inning and was on third, with no outs and the bases loaded, when catcher Miguel Olivo dropped the throw home on Kevin Kouzmanoff’s grounder to third.Chris Young picked a good time to pitch a great game for San Diego. He pitched seven shutout innings, lowered his ERA to 2.00, tied for best in the majors, and certainly pumped up his All-Star chances. FLORIDA (0) VS SAN DIEGO (1) - FINAL
