Phillips' slam gave the Reds a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. In the top of the fifth, he had an RBI double -- his 14th two-bagger of the year -- to restore the four-run lead at 5-1. An inning later, Phillips' RBI single made it 8-1 for Cincy. Phillips, who scored twice, has struck out 61 times, but is batting .280. He's also surpassed his home run output from 2006 -- in 175 less at-bats. The A's have abandoned the idea of having Mike Piazza return as a catcher. He'll begin DHing at Triple-A Sacramento on Friday. That was a waste of a month. Piazza is likely to spend 7-10 days playing at Sacramento. The A's could opt to trade him when he's ready to return. The other option would be to start him over Jack Cust at DH. This means Jason Kendall will likely be Oakland's primary catcher the rest of the way. Chris Carpenter experienced renewed stiffness and swelling of his right elbow after his last rehab start and will likely be examined within the next several days. "We'll re-evaluate it after someone sees him," manager Tony La Russa said. "I don't know what it is or how substantial it is." There go Carpenter's chances of returning before the end of the month. The Cardinals think it might be the arthritic condition in his elbow causing his problems. Rangers activated first baseman Mark Teixeira from the 15-day disabled list. Teixeira's return will push Brad Wilkerson back to the outfield and should result in fewer at-bats for Sammy Sosa and Marlon Byrd, once Byrd cools off. Victor Diaz heads back to Triple-A to make room on the roster. Curt Schilling, who was originally slated to throw 30-35 pitches, made 55 pitches Friday in his first mound session since landing on the DL with shoulder tendinitis. "Didn't look like there was a whole lot of effort behind it to get the ball to come out of his hand well," Francona said. "It was a really good day. I think we thought it was going to be. That's the way we set it up." Schilling could throw an inning to hitters as soon as Monday and then possibly make a rehab start on July 21. Carlos Zambrano allowed three hits over 6 2/3 scoreless inning to beat the Astros and become the NL's first 11-game winner on Friday. Zambrano left with the bases loaded in the seventh, but Carlos Marmol retired Lance Berkman to get out of the jam. Zambrano struck out seven and walked three. He helped his cause with an RBI single in the fourth and a double and a run scored in the sixth. Giants signed general manager Brian Sabean to a two-year contract extension with a club option for the 2010. While they do have a large budget and one of the best groups of young starters in the game, the Giants' future appears bleak, especially now that Sabean is going to remain at the helm. Maybe things will change once Barry Bonds is gone and Sabean doesn't have to try to build the offense around him with aging hitters every year. We're pretty skeptical, though.
