The All-Mediocre Team - An interesting romp through history to find players at each position who define mediocrity. Boy this brings back a lot of memories.

Tex On the Move? - If the Rangers consider moving Mark Teixeira, and there is zero indication that they will at this time, Over the Monster thinks the Red Sox are a good fit.

Lin-Done - McCovey Chronicles laments ever believing in Todd Linden. Lucky for them, he just got released so there's no need to worry about him wasting any more at bats while Dave Roberts is injured.

Catcher's Interference - Baseball Toaster has a breakdown of the 12 catcher's interference calls so far this season. Of note, 9 have occurred in the NL.

Fremont Express - The Oakland Athletics have signed a land deal in Fremont giving them space to build a new stadium.

Celebration for Barry - Dayn Perry writes about baseball's plans surrounding Barry Bonds' pursuit of Hank Aaron.

Alberto Callaspo was arrested Thursday on charges for assaulting his wife.
Callaspo was taken into custody on suspicion of assault and criminal damage, according to police who did not release any details. Callaspo was still being interviewed later Thursday night and didn't not accompany the Diamondbacks to Houston for Friday's game. It's possible he'll get the Julio Mateo treatment and be optioned to the minors because of the incident.

Tim Wakefield lowered his ERA to 1.79 by tossing seven shutout innings Thursday against the Blue Jays.
The Red Sox completed a three-game sweep and expanded their lead int he AL East to seven games. Wakefield has opened 2007 on one of the best runs of his long career, even if he is only 4-3. Tonight's 8-0 victory was just the second time the Red Sox have scored more than four runs in one of his outings, and the club has totaled four runs in his losses. Wakefield now leads the AL in ERA over Dan Haren (1.89) and Gil Meche (2.15).

Dave Roberts has decided to have arthroscopic surgery to remove floating bone chips and bone spurs from his left elbow.
Roberts is likely to miss about a month after undergoing surgery Friday or Monday. Todd Linden will help fill in for him, and Omar Vizquel will move back to the top of the lineup with Roberts sidelined. Expect the Giants to call up either Nate Schierholtz or Fred Lewis to replace him on the roster.

Kelvim Escobar fanned nine Indians in his fourth career shutout Thursday.
Escobar allowed seven hits and walked none in an 103-pitch outing. It was his first shutout since he joined the Angels prior to the 2004 season. Escobar has allowed a total of three runs over his last 23 2/3 innings. He'll remain worth using in all formats until he lands back on the disabled list.

Adam Dunn missed the cycle by a single and drove in three runs in the Reds' 9-5 win over the Astros on Thursday.
Dunn hit his 11th homer, tripled and then doubled in his first three at-bats. Needing only a single, he grounded into a double play in the sixth and never got another chance, as he was left on deck to end the bottom of the eighth. Dunn keeps batting fifth and sixth despite a .286/.384/.635 line this year. He's tied for the NL lead in homers with Barry Bonds.

Jose Contreras pitched his second career shutout Thursday against the Twins.
He threw 98 pitches as the White Sox won the game 3-0 in 2:14. It was an incredibly encouraging performance from Conteras, even if the Twins are seriously beat up at the moment. There's still not much to like about Contreras' 21/17 K/BB ratio in 40 1/3 innings this season, but since getting lit up by the Indians on Opening Day, he has 2.29 ERA.

B.J. Ryan underwent Tommy John surgery Thursday, ending his season.
Dr. James Andrews said last month than Ryan didn't need surgery, but a reexamination apparently found something different. The Jays hope Ryan will be ready for the start of 2008, but setbacks are a possibility. Jason Frasor, Jeremy Accardo and Casey Janssen are all candidates for saves in the Toronto pen.

Reds optioned third baseman Edwin Encarnacion to Triple-A Louisville.
And the Reds wonder why they're consistently a second-division team. Encarnacion is one of the team's best players, and the club is going to need him to bounce back if it has any chance of contending. Instead, it looks like he might be on the Austin Kearns path out of town. There should be several teams looking to find out just how much bullpen help it would take to acquire the 24-year-old.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.
