THT Daily: Bonds hits twoby Matthew CarruthJuly 20, 2007 Major League News for July 20Today’s LinksPlayer News Yesterday’s Results Today’s Games Standings Game of the Day Top Minor League Performances You can always find the most recent THT Daily at http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/content/thtdaily/ THT LinksThe Man Not Quite Made of Iron - Padre fans are getting understandably upset over the lack of attention to Tony Gwynn's Hall of Fame entrance in favor of Cal Ripken Jr.'s induction. Reverse Hitting Drills - Hitting a round ball with a round bat has been called the most difficult skill in sports. Want to learn how to make it more difficult? Watch the Athletics. He Still Doesn't Strike Anyone Out - After winning three consecutive one-run games against Oakland, the Twins faced division leading Detroit and promptly lost three consecutive one-run games. All three games were closed out by Todd Jones who has had a recent bout of success. Twin Problems - In response to the three game sweep pushing the Twins from six to nine games out of the division lead and severely hampering their run at the wild card as well, Twinkie Town documents some organizational faults that lead to their current predicament. Sad Times - Not only are young pitchers getting their arms shredded through overuse and little to no oversight in youth baseball, but now, powered by incorrect beliefs, some healthy young pitchers are attempting to get elbow reconstruction surgery (TJ) because they believe it will improve their velocity. Those Pesky Groundscrew - Once you get a found groundscrew around, there's no hope, they'll just multiply forever and they are really difficult to squash. THT Links represents the best efforts of our editors in scouring the various tubes of the interweb for both relevant and irrelevant news items. If you have happened upon a story that we have overlooked or wish to give feedback of any sort, please notify us at . Player NewsPlayer Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldAfter taking three straight days off, Barry Bonds delivered his best game of the year Thursday, going 3-for-3 with two homers, six RBI and a walk in the 9-8 loss to the Cubs. Both of Bonds' homers came off lefties. The second to center off Will Ohman was especially impressive, sailing through a stiff breeze blowing in. Bonds is now up to 753 career homers. His second today was his 19th of the year, breaking Carlton Fisk's record for a player in his age 43 season. Not only is Bonds two away from tying Hank Aaron, but his 755th career homer will also tie him with Fisk for the most homers hit after age 40 (72). Chris Carpenter will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the season. How's that five-year extension looking now? The Cardinals gave Carpenter a $63.5 million deal last winter, even though he was already under control through 2008. Maybe he'll come back and be something worth close to that. However, as many arm problems as he's had over the course of his career, there's just no guarantee that he'll ever again be a dominant starter. Tommy John surgery will put him out through at least the All-Star break. It's probably about 60-40 that he'll come back and make a positive impact over the final two months of 2008. Pirates acquired infielder Cesar Izturis and cash considerations from the Cubs for a player to be named. With the Cubs clearly not interested in having him around, Izturis would have made a lot of sense as a backup on a contender. The Pirates, though, had no reason to acquire him. Giving him time at shortstop is only going to further damage their chances of ever moving Jack Wilson, and there's also little point to playing him over Jose Castillo. He's a clear upgrade over Don Kelly, but the Pirates aren't going to be helping themselves long-term by giving him at-bats now. C.C. Sabathia became baseball's first 13-game winner after allowing four runs -- three earned -- in six innings Thursday against the Rangers. Sabathia wasn't nearly at his best once again. Between his previous two starts -- both losses -- and tonight, he's allowed 30 hits in 17 innings. It doesn't seem like there's any physical problem, so he'll probably turn in a dominant showing soon enough. He gets Boston next.
