Obviously, there were two big stories yesterday. Roger Clemens' return to New York (you didn't really think they were going to stand pat while their rotation did their best Oakland outfield impression did you?) and, for those of us following prospects, Tim Lincecum's big league debut. I must say, having watched Lincecum at Washington and some scouting video of his brief time in the PCL, that wasn't the Lincecum I have seen out there. I would caution against making a rash judgement on him yet.Besides that, on a quick personal note, Friday afternoon saw me hand in the stat project that marked the end of my undergraduate tenure at Penn. So to all members of the class of 2007 be it high school, undergrad, grad, doctoral, whatever, congratulations.
The Bonds Poll - Jayson Stark looks over some implications from the national poll concerning Barry Bonds. Meanwhile, I'm in Gammons camp on this one. The fans are (mostly) apathetic about the issue, its the media that's causing whatever frenzy exists.
Banning Alcohol in the Clubhouse - In the wake of Josh Hancock's death, several teams and Major League Baseball itself is considering banning alcohol consumption in the clubhouse.
Suspension - The Mariners suspended relief pitcher Julio Mateo for 10 days without pay after being arraigned on domestic assault charges. Mateo was also optioned down to Triple-A.
Don't Believe the Hype - Roger Clemens did not pick New York because he wants to win a title. If he wanted a title, he would have gone to the Red Sox or he would have expanded his search to include any team willing to offer him the travel schedule he desires.
Patterson Lands on DL - Nationals starter John Patterson hits the DL with elbow inflammation after his last start. Patterson has been largely ineffective this season. For the Nationals sake, who have no other proven pitchers in the rotation, maybe the DL stint will help Patterson regain his form.
Desperation - Are the Phillies desperate? The moves made by Charlie Manuel seem to be following that pattern.

Player News
Player Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldRoger Clemens will receive a prorated salary of $28 million after signing with the Yankees on Sunday. That means he'd earn $4.67 million per month or $18.67 million if he returns at the end of May as planned. So much for the Yankees' payroll reduction. This will put them back over $200 million, even after factoring in what the Rangers are paying Alex Rodriguez. In addition to the record salary, Clemens is expected to have the same travel privileges he did in Houston. So if he isn't pitching, there's a good chance he won't be with the teim (you can't tell us there's no I in team).
Bartolo Colon suffered a mild biceps strain before leaving Sunday's game against the White Sox. Since biceps injuries often turn out to be shoulder problems in reality, this is a major concern. Colon figured to have setbacks in his recovery from a torn rotator cuff, but he was looking so good in his rehab assignment and in his first couple of starts back in the majors. If he goes back on the DL, the Angels figure to recall Joe Saunders to replace him in the rotation
Twins placed catcher Joe Mauer on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 5, with a strained left quadriceps. An MRI discovered bleeding in the quad, so Mauer will miss at least 15 days. Chris Heintz will be called up in time for Tuesday's game. He'll serve as Mike Redmond's backup until Mauer returns.

The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Game of the Day
The Cubs won their fifth straight game by beating the Nationals, 4-3, in 10 innings. Ryan Theriot hit a game-tying single in a dramatic 9th inning (WPA of .483) and Daryle Ward singled home the winning run in the 10thLou Pinella managed like crazy, using four relievers in the seventh inning, two pinch hitters and a pinch runner in the ninth and having to ask Alfonso Soriano to play second base in the tenth inning.
