THT Daily: Day of Two’sby Matthew CarruthApril 12, 2008 Major League News for April 12Player News Yesterday’s Results Today’s Games Standings Top Minor League Performances You can always find the most recent THT Daily at http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/content/thtdaily/ Player NewsPlayer Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldBraves released infielder Scott Spiezio. The troubled Spiezio couldn't even make it two weeks in the organization. Braves GM Frank Wren said the team and Spiezio had agreed that he would submit to testing, continue his rehabilitation and report to the ballpark each day prepared to play. "Yesterday, he was not ready to play," Wren said. Spiezio played in just five games at Triple-A Richmond. Carlos Guillen is out of Saturday's lineup and is listed as day-to-day with a mild strain of his right hamstring. With Guillen out, Miguel Cabrera is making his first start at first base, opening up third base for Brandon Inge. Jason Marquis is feeling better after a battle with strep throat and is scheduled to make his second start of the season Sunday. Maquis was scratched Friday because of the illness. He gave up 5 runs -- 4 earned -- in 5 1/3 innings in his first start this season. Fernando Rodney threw a 35-40 pitch bullpen session Friday. Rodney apparently threw at about 80 percent velocity. He is scheduled for another session Monday. There is still no timetable for his return. Howie Kendrick (thumb) took batting practice and fielded ground balls Friday and is expected back in the lineup Saturday. Kendrick is hitting .429 through 28 at-bats. He also has two stolen bases. Adam Everett sat out Friday with a sore shoulder. It was a cold night in Kansas City, so the Twins decided to play it safe with Everett. Matt Tolbert got the start at short. Everett should be back in the lineup on Saturday. Jimmy Rollins missed his third straight start on Friday because of a sprained left ankle. Rollins said his ankle feels "about the same." He'll be a game-time decision again Saturday. Francisco Rodriguez (ankle) has been given the OK by manager Mike Scioscia and was available to close Friday night. Rodriguez didn't get a chance, as the Angels lost to the Mariners 8-5. He did throw in the bullpen and is feeling "a lot better now." Dodgers manager Joe Torre said he's removed Esteban Loaiza from the rotation and replacing him with Hong-Chih Kuo against the Pirates on Tuesday. That's a pretty disgusting way to treat a veteran, and it's especially surprising coming from Joe Torre. Loaiza had a solid enough spring, and the day after he allowed four runs over four innings in his first start of the year, Torre said he'd stick with him as a fifth starter. Now he's reversing course. It's a long shot that this will work out, as Kuo has never been able to stay healthy as a starter. Odds are that Loaiza will be right back in the rotation in two weeks, except he'll be a worse bet than ever because his arm strength will have deteriorated that much more.
