Player News
Player news items are provided by RotoworldAccording to the Boston Globe, Manny Ramirez's strained left oblique will sideline him "indefinitely."
Meanwhile, the Boston Herald quotes Ramirez as saying that he may miss as many as 10 games. "I don't think it's going to be a couple of days," manager Terry Francona said. "It's more likely to be multiple days as opposed to tomorrow. I think we need to play this one out. He's still pretty sore." Francona added that Ramirez has been playing through back problems for six weeks, which may help explain why he's hitting just .253 with two homers this month.
Ben Sheets came off the DL Wednesday to help spark Milwaukee to a much-needed 6-1 win over the Cubs.
This was just the Brewers fourth win in 15 games. Sheers lasted six innings in his first outing since July 14, improving to 11-4 by giving up just six hits and a run, striking out two and walking one. He's lowered his ERA to 3.30.
Aaron Harang tossed a two-hit shutout Wednesday to lead Cincinnati to an easy 8-0 whitewash of the Pittburgh Pirates.
Harang's 14th win of the season was masterful, as he needed just 94 pitches -- 70 strikes -- to polish off the Pirates. He struck out eight, walked one, hit one and lowered his ERA to 3.51 with this effort, his fourth straight win.
Manny Ramirez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game with what the Red Sox are now calling a strained left oblique.
That's worse than a minor back issue. Still, the Red Sox are listing him as day-to-day and seem optimistic that he'll be able to play this weekend. Eric Hinske is starting in left field tonight.
Erik Bedard will miss his start Saturday versus the Red Sox because of a sore oblique.
Bedard said the injury has been bothering him for three or four weeks, which serves to explain some of his recent mediocre performances. The Orioles will go with Radhames Liz on Friday and Garrett Olson on Saturday, which seems like more bad news for the Yankees.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength.
