Alex Rodriguez is being placed on the 15-day DL because of his Grade 2 quad strain, YES reports. Losing Rodriguez and Jorge Posada in a two-day span really hurts, but at least it's still early on. The Yankees will go with Morgan Ensberg and Alberto Gonzalez at third base for next couple of weeks. Ensberg is the better bet of the two in AL-only leagues.

Braves placed RHP John Smoltz on the disabled list with a severely inflamed biceps tendon and inflamed rotator cuff. Smoltz received the scary sounding diagnoses Tuesday after being examined by Dr. James Andrews, but the Braves are hopeful that he can avoid surgery and return after a few weeks of rest. Smoltz has had shoulder and neck problems since spring training and complained of soreness following his start Sunday against the Mets.

Making his major league debut in relief of Edgar Gonzalez, Max Scherzer retired all 13 hitters he faced Tuesday versus the Astros, striking out seven. Scherzer hit 98 mph on the gun and left little doubt that he can be a dominant late-inning reliever right away. Still, the guess is that the Diamondbacks will put him into the rotation, maybe in place of Gonzalez next week. The only problem with that is the eventual return of Doug Davis.

Troy Tulowitzki suffered a strained left quad Tuesday versus the Giants. Tulowitzki, who wasn't supposed to play tonight, could go on the disabled list because of the injury. It wouldn't be such a bad thing for him to get a week of at-bats in the minors anyway, though the Rockies will surely miss his glove. Clint Barmes will be the regular shortstop while Tulo is out. Omar Quintanilla figures to be called up to help out at second.

Chad Cordero is expected to go back on the disabled list, time time with a strained lat muscle below his throwing shoulder. The Nationals think he probably hurt himself while trying to compensate for weakness in his right shoulder. Jesus Colome and Luis Ayala will set up for Jon Rauch while Cordero is out.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.
