Chris Carpenter will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow and is expected to miss at least three months. It was clear this was a possibility. Carpenter said he felt fine following his simulated game Tuesday, but he must have had swelling in the elbow within the last couple of days. Carpenter should be able to come back strong after having a bone spur removed from his elbow, but it typically does take three months. It looks like Brad Thompson is the leading candidate to replace him in the rotation.

Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi admittted that he lied about B.J. Ryan having a back problem this spring, revealing that it was his elbow that bothered him all along. "First of all, it wasn't B.J. Ryan's back that was bothering him," Ricciardi told Toronto's Fan 590. "It was his elbow that was bothering him. So we said it was his back so we could have a little bit more time." Incredible. It's one thing to downplay an injury, but it's entirely another to lie about the whole thing. Ryan and manager John Gibbons went along with the scheme, and Gibbons, in particular, looked like a fool for some of his quotes along the way. It's lesson learned for us. Even more so than the Cubs and A's, the Jays can't be trusted when it comes to providing injury info.

Chien-Ming Wang took a perfect game into the eighth inning before giving up a solo homer Saturday. He ended up allowing one run and two hits over eight innings in a defeat of the Mariners. Wang, who suffered a cracked fingernail in his previous start, retired the first 25 hitters he faced before Ben Broussard took him out to right-center. Jose Guillen followed that up with a single, but Wang bounced back to get the final two outs of the inning before leaving after 103 pitches. Wang has won all five of his career starts against the Mariners, and it's easy to see why he matches up so well against them. Unless he's moved in front of Kei Igawa in the rotation, he'll face Seattle again on Friday.

Tigers placed RHP Joel Zumaya on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 2, with an injury to his right knuckle. The Tigers wasted no time at all here. The assumption is that Zumaya has a dislocated knuckle. If so, he figures to miss at least a month. The bigger problem would be if he also tore a ligament in the process. That might double or triple the length of his absence.

The Mariners have pushed back Felix Hernandez's return from an elbow injury another six days. He's now scheduled to return May 15 against the Angels. Of course, it's better than 50-50 that he'll be pushed back again. "He's fine, but we feel this is the smart thing to do with him, and he felt comfortable with it," manager Mike Hargrove said. "He will throw a simulated game on Tuesday [in Detroit], have another bullpen on the 11th, and if everything goes well, he'll start on the 15th." The Mariners are doing the right thing by being careful here. What they did wrong was to keep setting dates for his return in the first place. First it was May 4, then May 9 and now May 15.

John Patterson will undergo an MRI for the sore biceps that he admitted was bothering him prior to Saturday. "It's when I get extension. When I reach out to throw a pitch, my arm wants to protect itself and so it grabs and pulls up," he said. "It does it on breaking balls. It does it on fastballs. So, it's something that I'm fighting. I don't really know what to do for it at this point." Rest it? It's just a thought. Gutting it out for a 110-loss team doesn't make a lot of sense.

Joe Mauer will have a precautionary MRI on his sore left quad Sunday, the Twins announced. Even if nothing turns up, it seems likely that he'll miss at least one more game. Mike Redmond will catch in his place once again.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.
