Player News
Player news items are provided by RotoworldAccording to the Boston Globe, Curt Schilling (shoulder) will likely return to the Red Sox rotation on August 5 against Seattle.
It's possible he could also be back August 6 against the Angels if Boston elects to give him more rest. Josh Beckett is currently scheduled to start Aug. 5. "There's room to change that depending on how many pitches Beckett throws [in his next start], how hard he works," manager Terry Francona said. "We can do what we want."
Barry Bonds hit career homer No. 754 in his first at-bat Friday and then walked in his remaining four plate appearances in the Giants' 12-10 win over the Marlins.
All of the walks were unintentional, though Renyel Pinto, in particular, seemed to want absolutely nothing to do with him in the sixth. Of course, that meant more chances for everyone else, and for once, the rest of the lineup stepped up, with Pedro Feliz, Bengie Molina and Ray Durham all hitting homers. Bonds may have more of an opportunity to tie the record Saturday against Dontrelle Willis and company.
According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Red Sox had a three-way deal in place for Jermaine Dye that fell through because of an unspecified issue with a player from the third club.
The third club is unknown. Dye apparently was willing to go to the Red Sox, who were promising to play him five times per week. Something still might happen here. We're guessing Wily Mo Pena and more would go to the unspecified third team.
The Diamondbacks confirmed that Randy Johnson will have surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back next Friday and will miss the rest of the season.
Johnson says he'll come back in 2008. After all, he's getting paid, which seems to be the most important thing to him these days. It's pretty disturbing that he didn't continue to rehab given that the Diamondbacks are still in the race. They're a whole lot more likely to be sellers now.
Indians optioned LHP Cliff Lee to Triple-A Buffalo.
It's the right move. The Indians certainly aren't giving up on Lee, who is in the first year of a three-year, $14 million extension, but he clearly has some work to do to get back to where he should be. While Jeremy Sowers is a possibility, Aaron Laffey should be the choice to replace him in Cleveland's rotation.

The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength.
