THT Daily: Gallardo beats Piratesby Dave StudemanApril 30, 2009 Major League News for April 30Player News Yesterday’s Results Today’s Games Standings Top Minor League Performances You can always find the most recent THT Daily at http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/content/thtdaily/ Player NewsPlayer Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldRockies manager Clint Hurdle hinted Wednesday evening that he may consider a change at the closer's position. Manny Corpas technically has the job, but Huston Street picked up the save on Wednesday and is clearly the better pitcher at this point. "I'll sleep on some things," Hurdle said. Stay tuned. According to Selena Roberts' upcoming 255-page book on Alex Rodriguez, the Yankees slugger took steroids after 2003 and may have begun using them in high school. This is the same book that initially broke the news of A-Rod's steroid use while with the Texas Rangers. Now it has come to light that he flunked a screening in 2003, while in New York, and showed steroid-use symptoms into the 2005 season. A former high school teammate also told Roberts that Rodriguez was juicing in high school and their coach knew about it. In addition, the book alleges that former Yankees pitcher Kevin Brown was a steroid user. Indians placed designated hitter Travis Hafner on the 15-day disabled list with soreness in his right shoulder. It's somewhat disconcerting that Hafner is reportedly headed for a visit with Dr. James Andrews, but manager Eric Wedge told MLB.com that, "We don't think it's anything serious" and added, "Hopefully it's just a two-week thing." The Indians have called up Rich Rundles to take Hafner's place, but are expected to add a hitter prior to Friday's game. Possible options to join the team include David Dellucci (currently rehabbing in Columbus) and Matt LaPorta, who's hitting a scalding .368 at Triple-A. Yovani Gallardo struck out 11 over eight innings and homered off Ian Snell to give the Brewers a 1-0 victory over the Pirates on Wednesday. Gallardo has already been on the wrong end of a 1-0 game this season. He made sure he was on the winning side today with his second homer of this year and fourth in 61 career at-bats. This one came in the bottom of the seventh, as manager Ken Macha opted to let him hit for himself even though he was already around 100 pitches. He ended up throwing 116 before Carlos Villanueva came in for the ninth. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength.
