Marlins placed first baseman Nick Johnson on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 17, with a strained right hamstring.
Johnson is eligible to return in early September and the hope is he'll be ready be then. The first baseman was hitting 12-for-39 with his new club before the injury. Ross Gload and Gaby Sanchez will fill in at first base.

Zack Greinke struck out a team-record 15 batters while tossing eight innings of two-run ball in a 6-2 win over the Indians on Tuesday night.
Greinke's previous career-best was 12. The previous team-record was Mark Gubicza, when he struck out 14 in 1988. Greinke held the Indians to just five hits and one walk in the dominating effort, lowering his ERA to 2.43 on the year. Now with 197 strikeouts (second in the league), Greinke has already passed his previous career-high, set last season (183). He's slated to face the Mariners on Sunday.

Adam Wainwright spun a gem against the Astros on Tuesday, tossing eight scoreless innings on the way to earning his National League-best 15th victory.
The Cardinals topped Wandy Rodriguez and the Astros 1-0 in the one of the better pitching duels of the season. Wainwright was brilliant, limiting the Astros to just three hits while fanning five and not walking a batter. After giving up a double to Michael Bourn to lead off the game, he retired 17 batters in a row. Wainwright has now allowed two runs or less in 12 straight starts, dating back to June 21. With a 15-7 record to go along with a 2.50 ERA, Wainwright has jumped to the forefront in the NL Cy Young race.

According to David Lennon of Newsday, J.J. Putz was found to have fraying and a slight tear of the ulnar collateral ligmament in his right right forearm.
The Mets have already shut Putz down for the rest of the season. The injuries came to light after he cut a simulated game short on Saturday. He'll try rehabbing first, but surgery is also an option.

Giants placed second baseman Freddy Sanchez on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain.
Sanchez missed six consecutive games before the Giants decided to make the move. He'll be eligible to return in eight days and should be ready by then. For now, Eugenio Velez is expected to fill in at second base.

Jake Peavy told reporters Tuesday evening that he isn't sure he'll feel well enough to start Saturday against the Yankees.
Peavy was nailed in his pitching elbow by a comebacker during a rehab start Monday and has some lingering soreness. The White Sox are in the midst of a playoff race, but would be wise to delay his debut another week.

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, Johan Santana will need season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow, but should be ready for the start of the 2010 season.
And the Mets' fanbase breathes a collective sigh of relief. A examination by Dr. David Altchek revealed that Santana has bone chips his elbow that need some cleaning. It certainly could have been worse, but the Mets have nothing to play for, so perhaps this is a blessing in disguise. He finishes the season at 13-9 with a 3.13 ERA. Santana has four years remaining on a six-year, $137.5 million contract with the Mets.

Red Sox acquired LHP Billy Wagner from the Mets for two players to be named later.
The deal was thought to be dead, but after some heavy lobbying by the Mets, the 38-year-old southpaw changed his mind and waived his no-trade clause. Only two appearances back from Tommy John surgery, Wagner shouldn't be expected to throw more than two or three times a week, but the Red Sox are one of the few teams that can absorb his remaining contract while monitoring his workload closely. The Red Sox will not pick up his $8 million option for 2010, but retain the rights to offer arbitration. As for the Mets, they should get two mid-level prospects in return. It was a no-brainer for GM Omar Minaya.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports the Astros have placed right-hander LaTroy Hawkins on waivers.
Rosenthal expects the Rockies, Cardinals and Dodgers to heavily pursue the 36-year-old veteran. Colorado, with the lowest winning percentage of the three, would be given first crack. Hawkins has held opponents to a .645 OPS in 48 2/3 innings this season. He boasts a 2.03 ERA and 1.15 WHIP.

Standings

The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.
