Player Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldZack Greinke suffered his first loss of the season Saturday after tossing eight innings of one-run ball against the Angels.
He even looks good losing. Greinke struck out five batters and walked none, but received exactly zero run support. We've heard it's hard to win when your offense puts no runs on the board. He'll take a 6-1 record and a 0.51 ERA into next week's start against the Orioles.
Joba Chamberlain broke a blood vessel in his throwing hand Saturday during batting practice and may not be able to start on Sunday.
Chamberlain was tossing a ball back to the infield when he felt a pop. "He threw a ball in and he looked down at his thumb and he felt something and looked at it. He popped a blood vessel and he got some treatment during the game," manager Joe Girardi said late Saturday night. "We don't think it will be an issue but we have to protect ourselves." Alfredo Aceves will get the nod if Joba can't go.
John Danks struck out 10 hitters and allowed just one earned run over six innings Saturday against the Rangers, but was stuck with a no-decision.
Thank you very much, White Sox hitters. Danks killed it, surrendering only four hits and a walk while mowing down Texas batters. Chicago eventually pulled out the victory, but Danks saw none of the box score credit. He'll take his 2-2 record and 3.41 ERA on the road next week to Toronto. Hopefully the offense will make the trek.
Evan Longoria finished 2-for-4 with a home run and five RBI Saturday as the Rays romped the Red Sox 14-5.
Longoria kicked off the game's scoring with a two-run shot in the top of the first inning. He added two more RBI in the fifth on a double to deep left, then contributed a sacrifice fly in the seventh that scored B.J. Upton. Longoria's numbers are downright scary at this point. He has 11 home runs, 44 RBI and a .367 batting average. Wow. Those who passed on him, fearing a "sophomore slump," have to feel pretty silly right now.
Juan Pierre went 3-for-5 with three RBI to help the Dodgers dismantle the Giants on Saturday afternoon.
Who needs Manny Ramirez? Pierre hit two doubles, a single, and even scored a run of his own. He's batting .405 with six RBI in 42 at-bats. We'll see how he does with added responsibility over the course of the next 48 games, but all signs are good right now.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Aramis Ramirez's stint on the disabled list is likely to last about eight weeks.
"You're looking at a while," manager Lou Piniella said. "We'll know more after the first month." Early projections had him out for four to six weeks, but the news keeps getting worse. Of course, we're still waiting on his MRI results, which should give us all a better picture of what's really going on.
Astros manager Cecil Cooper announced Saturday that Russ Ortiz will move to the bullpen, effective immediately.
Felipe Paulino will replace him in the starting rotation. Ortiz is 2-1 with a 5.91 ERA and 1.79 WHIP in four starts this season. "He's not totally happy, but that's to be expected from a veteran guy," Cooper said. "He's going to go do some things in the pen and try and earn a spot back."
Lance Berkman was held out of the lineup for a second consecutive game on Saturday with lingering wrist soreness.
Berkman tried testing his wrist in the batting cage Saturday afternoon, but stopped after just one dry swing. It sounds like he'll be sidelined Sunday as well. "It's not a good sign," Berkman said. "I don't like missing games, but there's no point in going out there and letting this linger."
Mets manager Jerry Manuel was fined and suspended for Saturday's game after aggressively arguing with umpire Bill Welke on Thursday.
Sandy Alomar Sr. will manage in his place. Manuel was tossed in the eighth inning Thursday for arguing a questionable double play call, in which shortstop Jose Reyes was cited for interfering with a runner. He will not appeal.

The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength.
